Almost Bluegrass

Post by DannyWeber » Sun Mar 17, 2019 5:30 am

I’m trying to get better at writing and producing emotionally upbeat, positive instrumentals.
That being said..

1. How does this sound as an upbeat track for TV/Film?
2. Do you like the banjo part?
3. Are the edit points Okay?

Thanks for listening,

Dan

I'm sorta on-the-fence with this one.
Like the overall composition.
The clipped edit at the end of the first section sounds a bit too abrupt - like a mistake, rather than intentional.
The piano pops out as maybe either too midi, or just not 'appropriate' instrumentation - but I could easily be wrong about that - :? 8-) .
Since there's "Heels" in the title - I kinda get the percussion is a combination of a hand claps and boot-scootin' sound... maybe more of the boots and less of the hands?
To your question - banjo seems to be working alright when it's blended in with the other instruments.

I'd like to read what others - who've gotten placements with this type of cue - have to offer.

One iteration you might consider - half of that Intro going right into the 2nd section before your first edit...?
Hope that helps.

Hi Dan,

Respectfully, I think I have to agree with Peter about the edit points. To my ear they sound too abrupt, to the point of being unnatural. I'm going to listen again, but my first impression is that the track just sounds artificial and stiff as recorded. Melodically and in structure/form, it definitely has potential, but I think it just needs reworked. The piano definitely sounds MIDI and not like a piano. Maybe everything's over-quantized? Anyway, those are my humble observations.

I look forward to hearing it after some tweaking, if you decide to rework it!

Yeah, I think you need real instruments for this kind of track, it's just too obviously midi to my ears.

I'd love to hear this performed by a bluegrass group (although you'd be hard put to find one with a pianist)! Also I'd love to hear some real fiddle in there instead of just the fiddle hits. The guys' advice is all good. I really like the bouncy feel of the song. It's really upbeat and cheery! Keep up the good composing!

Hey Merry,

I didn't set out to write bluegrass.. it just reminds me of it. Just wanted something upbeat.

As a Newgrass piece - the parameters and expectations for authentic, live instrumentation could be considerably wider and more forgiving; as in, hybrids with other genre mixed in.
Even so, being careful not to be overly MIDI is probably gonna be important - because, for TAXI listing returns, that's among the most common critiques given: too midi.
Just sayin...
