Andrew Gold - A Very Belated R.I.P

Post by davekershaw » Fri Feb 20, 2015 10:53 am

I only just heard that Andrew Gold passed away in 2011. Don't know how I missed it!

His music was a great influence in the '70's, but I only came across his future work occasionally.
Lonely Boy is one of my all time favourites. Wonderfully crafted.

Anyway, R.I.P Andrew; an extremely talented songwriter and musician.
Thanks for leaving such great songs.

I loved and studied his work with Linda Ronstadt, as well as his solo stuff when I was leaning how to produce in the mid to late '70s. Many years later I was at the Loews hotel in Nashville where they have a sign as you pull into the driveway, "Thank you for being a friend," an Andrew Gold lyric.

Later that evening, I was in the elevator with a heavy set gent with very red hair who looked familiar, but I couldn't place him.

An hour later, I was at a songwriter event at the Ryman, and out came the heavy set red-haired guy on stage -- Andrew Gold!

His opening line: "I'm staying at the Loews hotel, and they've got my lyric quoted on a sign at the entrance. Do you think they gave me a F+&%ing discount? Hell no!"

He was incredible that night. He also did several tunes with Graham Gould. Wowzers!!

I had Val Garay as my guest on TAXI TV a year or two ago, and we talked about Andrew a lot before went live. An amazingly talented man who was never THAT widely known.

Thank you for being a friend,
Michael

And by the way... wasn't that Andrew playing the guitar solo on Linda Ronstadt's, "When Will I be Loved?"

If you've never heard it:

And here's a live version with skinny Andrew playing on the left side. Probably Danny Kortchmar playing the other guitar.

enjoy,
Michael

Wow I never knew that he played that solo. I remember when I first started playing Bars (at 19) we wanted to learn that song and I Loved that Guitar part. I guess he also produced that record as well.
So he was an influence on my Guitar playing and I didn't even know it.
I remember him mostly for the "Golden Girls" theme song "Thank You For Being A Friend" though.

As The Years go by.

Wasn't sure whether to post this at such a late date but glad I did now!
Loved the story Michael, and the two clips. Really creative guitar playing, and yes a very talented guy. I see there's a box set of Andrew Gold. I want to hear more of his later songs so will order it today.

Is that Graham GouldMAN? If so, yes I read 10cc wanted Andrew Gold to join the band, but he had other commitments at the time. I want to hear some the WAX recordings they did together. No sure whether they're in the box set.

Wish they didn't have those thumbs down on Youtube. Pointless negativity which I see Facebook are also considering.

Dave.

Hey Steve.

Never seen the show so don't know who sang it there, but here's the great man himself.
Teriffic arrangement. Wish I'd written it!
