Antares Dobro

Post by kurtkreimier » Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:47 am

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. I am not a guitar player so I need some help here. I have an Antares Dobro style guitar and I was curious if there was any kind of market for one of these and what it might be worth? Thanks,Kurt

I am an occasional purveyor of Dobro and National steel sounds, though I don't currently own a Dobro. I have never heard of Antares, but my guess would be that a quality import resonator guitar could be worth up to $500 on the used market, depending on features/condition/appointments. Post a pic?

Thanks Mojo. Good idea about the pic. Unfortunately I can't get my camera to work. It got dropped a few months ago but kept working, albeit with a little bit of limited function. But alas, it now will not work at all. Had the camera since 03 so I guess I'll bite the bullet a pick up a new one. In any case, I was really just curious about the guitar. We've had it for about 4 years and it was a gift from my wife's sister. Thanks again,Kurt

Man, I thought this was going to be a new Antares plug-in...first Autotune, now Dobro.

I have an Antares Dobro style guitar and I was curious if there was any kind of market for one of these and what it might be worth?Hi Kurt,I'm a guitar nut, so I looked this up on the web. Info for your instrument is hard to come by but here's what I got:I noticed on the web that a company by the name of VMI Industries distributed a number of entry level Asian-made musical instruments back in the 1980s and '90s under brand names like Sebring, Antares, Sedona, and Jammer. I have a few bits of info for you below, but my quick opinion is that your dobro is a relatively inexpensive copy made in Korea and is probably about 20 years old. The brand name won't add value to the instrument, but if if looks good and plays well, its worth would be about the same as any other inexpensive, well-made, entry-level instruments with comparable details.Per Link One: [Start of quote]Antares guitars are currently manufactured in Korea and distributed in the U.S. market by Vega Musical Instruments (VMI) Industries of Brea, California. If you need to contact VMI they can be reached at: P.O. Box 13572980-D Enterprise St.Brea, C.A. 92822-1357800-237-4864714-572-1492[End of quote]Per Link Two:The link above takes you to a page that displays two of the company's catalogs dated from the 1980sPer Link Three:The above link is a page of Antares guitars currently for sale on eBay. Although all of the guitars are inexpensive, my eye tells me that the company's instruments were well made for the price.Per Link Four:The link above takes you to the Blue Book Publications site. Here's their quote:"Instruments previously manufactured in Korea during the 1980s and 1990s. Distributed in the U.S. market by Vega Musical Instruments (VMI) Industries of Brea, CA. Antares guitars were designed for entry-level musicians and guitar students. Designs range from a six-string classical model to six-string steel string models of various finishes and even a twelve-string model with advertised prices starting around $100. Antares also offered electric guitars and basses."I'm neither an appraiser nor a collector, but I have observed that when a musical instrument is as rare as yours appears to be, the value increases only if there is a demand for the brand. Antares is associated with entry-level instruments, so even if yours is the only Antares dobro left on the planet - who knows - I wouldn't expect it to fetch a premium if you sold it.Allen
