Quote:Now there's a few I've never heard of! Can you actually sing (or hum) them all? I think I can do most of horacejesse's main list, but I'm going to have to bow out here...I think so. The one from Vince Guaraldi is more of a humming thing than a singing thing for me. Here are a few lines from each that might jog your memory (I may not get them completely right, I'm trying to just go by memory myself):"(Went back and found YouTube versions of these... hope that's ok)Santa Baby (Eartha Kitt)"Santa Baby, slip a sable under the tree for me..."(and the line I hear in my head is towards the end)"been an awfully good girl, Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea_Zv1O7ZDg(Weird video but great audio)Best part in the lyric to me is:"I really do believe in youLet's see if you believe in me" (kind of a little bridge section)Christmastime Is Here (Vince Guaraldi's song from the Peanuts special)"Christmas time is here Bringing lots of cheer"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQjUWyGc8Nk(oops - now that I listen to it, it's "happiness and cheer")My Grown-up Christmas List"No more lives torn apart That wars would never startAnd time would heal all hearts....(more in the middle, then)"This is my grown-up Christmas list.Found a version on YouTube with Kelly Clarkson:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v3usz_UcGU(It's more of a performance piece than a sing-along thing)Mele Kalikimaka (sp?)"mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say On a bright Hawaiian Christmas day That's the island greeting that we send to you From the land where palm trees sway"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYRAUFc3M9A(Learned this in 2nd grade as part of Christmas presentation - maybe it's a California thing )Good Christian Men, Rejoice"Good Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul and voice Give ye heed to what we say News, news, Jesus Christ is born today Ox and ass before him bow And he is in the manger now"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4uLZcaR ... re=related(One of the few times I got to say "ass" as a kid without that look from my mother)Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming (probably doesn't get a lot of radio play, so it may not count )"Lo, how a rose e'er bloomingFrom tender stem hath sprungOf Jesse's lineage comingAs men of old hath sungHe came a floweret brightAmidst the cold of winterWhen half-spent was the night"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr-KzVO7mOcI Wonder As I Wander(great recordings by Barbra Streisand and Julie Andrews of this one - it's an Appalachian carol, I think)"I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Savior did come for to die For poor ornery people like you and like I I wonder as I wander out under the sky"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTqbMHU7JZoGo Tell It On The Mountain"Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Go tell it on the mountain That Jesus Christ is born."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBh4Y2m6VqcBring a Torch, Jeanette IsabellaBring a torch, Jeanette Isabella,Bring a torch hmm-mmm-mmm(more I can't remember except for)Hush, hush, beautiful is the motherHush, hush, beautiful is the child"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oapBLluserAPatapan (know the tune more than the words - often done as an instrumental)"Willie, play your fife and drum .......... When we hear the tune you'll play tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan (then the "when we hear" again?)(it's the "tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan" that sticks in my head)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi9QWpuIQno I Saw Three Ships"I saw three ships come sailing by on Christmas Day, on Christmas DayI saw three ships come sailing by on Christmas Day in the morning"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulQgAV3CVZMHere We Come A-WassailingHere we come a-wassailing among the leaves so greenAnd here we come a caroling ..... to be seenLove and joy come to youAnd to you your wassail, tooAnd God bless you and send you a happy new yearAnd God send you a happy new year"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZEg25TEPC0Baby, It's Cold Outside(This is a great "persuasion" song. The girl's saying that she has to go and the guy's saying that it's cold outside, there's a nice fire here and can't she just stay a little bit longer? I can hum it but I listen to it at Christmas, I don't sing it)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iawqDU1E ... elatedHope that helps. Sometimes the titles don't really go with the words.

Yes, I can do (by "do" I mean at least hum) most of the songs on the main list-- I was referring to the others posted by jamesm. Those were more elusive to me... Santa Baby and Here We Come A-Wassailing, yes, I'd heard those before, but the others were less familiar... I'm not so familiar with all these songs from the radio, as I never listened to the radio in our home growing up (or now, for that matter). Quote:I just went through the list again, and my answer is YES. The one and only song on the list I CAN'T sing from memory is:"Grandma got Ran Over By a Reindeer" (Growing up in the south, I developed a serious issue with songs that made southerners seem like idiotic toothless uneducated morons, and, right or wrong, that song fit the bill...so I made a conscious effort to block it from my mind. And I STILL have no interest in hearing it, although I seriously wish I had the 5-mil he's earned for writing it... )Wow. That was an eye-opener-- I never recognized this feature of the song until just now, with your note. Thanks, Ted. Sometimes I miss things as obvious as this one (how could I??), and you are right, it does promote the stereotype with the use of a southern accent in the song. Gosh, this could be the topic of a whole new thread... a very interesting new thread! Yes, the 5mil would be nice... <sigh>Raags

Here's the ASCAP page on the top 25 Christmas songs over the last five years.http://www.ascap.com/press/2007/111207_holiday.aspxSo can "Do they know it's Christmas? (Feed the World)" and "Wonderful Christmastime" be considered classics yet?"Do they know.." was written in 1984 and "Wonderful Christmastime" in 1979Looks like we missed "Carol of the Bells" and "Rockin' around the Christmas Tree"

Social protest songs under any guise will never become Christmas classics. That is my opinion. Christmas songs are fairytales. There is room now for a sort of realism too, but millionaires squalling about someone's lack of food ain't it IMO.

But the earlier part sorta leaves "And so this is Christmas" by J. Lennon out of the loop, and I make a point of trying to hear that at least once or twice every December.Just two (MORE) copper pennies' worth...

I have nothing against protest songs eleven months of the year. But protest songs bitch, and I don't want to hear that during the runup to Christmas. If it is a protest song, someone is bitching about something. I like tidings of comfort and joy.
