Anybody else try to watch A Very Murray Christmas?

Post by TimWalter » Wed Dec 16, 2015 11:24 am

Hi all..
I heard a pc on NPR about this Christmas special, and thought, hey I'll check it out. (on Netflix) I'm a big fan of some of Bill's movies (Lost in Translation, Ground Hog Day, etc), and thought it would be fun.

No, not so much.. arghh.. Whereas the opening scene has Bill singing while Paul Schaffer (sp?) tickled the ivories, I came away thinking "thats why Ive never heard Bill sing before". Paul was incredible as usual on the piano.. He is an incredible musician... but his stellar playing couldn't save this, IMHO. I shut it off after about 30 miniutes, just poorly written, gags werent funny, acting in parts horrific... disappointed...

Just my thoughts this morning!

Have a great one.

Yes it was quite odd, but very Bill Murray. Also somewhat entertaining. Like one of those horrific scenes where you can't avert your eyes.

His lounge act persona may be an acquired taste, but...Mr. Murray can have the mic at my gig, anytime he wants. Whatever follows is bound to be memorable, and might make for at least an interesting contemporary worship service, if not an entertaining one.

As much as I love Bill Murray, my holiday movie-watching tends to run to the traditional....

"A Christmas Carol", the Alastair Sims version. All the actors in that film are so good! I'm a puddle by the end of it! This year, I saw a great free version on Youtube.

Be sure to check out Paul Shaffer's book "Thank You. We'll Be Here The Rest Of Our Lives." He's not as good a writer as he is a musician, but the book is full of stories over his music career. An easy read.

Paul, I'll check that out. I really enjoy biographical books about musicians. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think the only reason that film got any got any buzz is because Bill Murray's name is attached to it. And I love Bill Murray, but that show is a flop.

A beautiful flop, a Fosbury Flop; if you're gonna fail, why not fail spectacularly? Say what you will, but Bill hung it out there; like Walter Payton, he left everything on the field, and you gotta respect that. Or maybe you don't, but I do.

One thing you can say for Bill as a performer, he is courageous. Taking chances, spontaneity, being in the moment are all things I admire and aspire too. He has done all those things in the course of his career extremely well.
