Appreciate ears on a re recording...THANKS

Post by SteveC » Sun Nov 27, 2016 10:22 am

Hi,

this isn't for any particular listing. Its a work in progress for a project I'm immersed in. Recorded and posted this song about a month ago, with my vocal. I thought I would maybe make it a duet, but opted to record with a female vox. Thanks Natalie Major for coming in and laying down some tracks! Required a re record of guitars to fit her key and this is the first mix. My ears are exhausted so looking to the voices of reason for some feedback. This is the first time I've written something that someone else has done the vocals to. All comments welcome, thanks for the listen.

Thanks

BEEN A LONG TIME COMING DRAFT

You said I was the love of your life / and that you’d never leave us behind
You said that there would always be time / then you walked away….
I can’t explain the who what or why / it’s like you knew what I felt inside
My heart was just along for the ride / I just couldn’t stay
It’s been a long time coming / it’s been a long time wasted its true
It’s been a long time wasted for me and you
Bet you didn’t know what you find / believing in love one more time
You said I made your dreams come alive / then you walked away
We knew if we stayed / there’d be pain / 2 mimes / looking for / words to say
Nothing left for us to believe / so we walked away
It’s been a long time coming / it’s been a long time wasted its true
It’s been a long time wasted for me and you
BABY… It’s been a long time coming / it’s been a long time wasted its true.. BABY
It’s been a long time wasted for me and you
Bridge
It feels like we’ve walked out of this door…..before
Its back to searching for our some / -one to love……

You said I was the love of your life / I said I’d never leave us behind
We never found what we hoped to find / so we walked away

BABY…It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time wasted its true BABY
It’s been a long time wasted for me and you
BABY... It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time wasted its true BABY
It’s been a long time wasted for me and you

GREAT job with this one, man! Her vocals sound current and the song itself is catchy/modern.

The mix sounds great but honestly I'd say the frequent ride cymbals come off a little 80's 90's, which seems a bit out of place cause the song sounds pretty modern to me. Also the concept of cymbal buildups is kinda outdated now, so I'd replace that with either a simple drum fill or a half of mesasure of accapella. But hey that's just me.

Hey Steve,

The mix sounds good to me. To my ears this tune has a lot of 90's elements to it. I think it's mainly the way the drums are treated, but it's also got some U2 guitar work going on it there. If that was your goal, you've nailed it.

Sounds really good Steve, she gave you a great vocal.
Listening on laptop headphones I found myself noticing the round bass and not hearing some of the guitar work down towards that region. Don't know, it could be just how I woke up this morning
Maybe a personal taste thing with the delay on her vox in the opening lines, I thought it could be longer.
I sort of agree with the cymbal riding but it may be totally appropriate for what your shooting for.

Good luck with this cool song.

Had alisten in the studio, could be miles off but there sounds like a lot of low bass there. I think once you drop the bottom end out you might notice it is a bit bright too.
Thats just what I heard here.
Bloody good track though :)

Hey hey NaeDae,

Tried a few things but kept coming back to the cymbal build. Still tweaking a few things. And YES, Natalie did a great job! Thanks for the ears.

Hi John,
Had to redo the guitars to get to Natalie's vocal key, and in this mix, I brought the guitars up a bit and the keyboards are way in the back run thru an old Leslie, so the 90's vibe is hard to escape. There's an accordion somewhere in the bridge. Not sure what the goal was, but a U-2 ala can't ever hurt. Thanks for the listen.

Les, I hear the same thing and still have a few things that are bugging me. The snare at the outro comes in over the vox for one. Thanks as always for your sharp ears.

Ronnie, way to kind. I've learned a lot from these forums and I've heard some great great music as well. It almost forces you to elevate your game if you're going to post something. Still a scary experience.

Thanks everyone for taking a listen. Now back to work.

Hi

tweaked a few things ( thanks for the input everyone ) I'm thinking I'm done with this track unless anyone hears something that these tired ears have surrendered to.

As always thanks for all the help and feedback

Sounds great to me.
Excellent song, excellent vocal.
Only nit I had was ... 2 mimes .. seemed a bit rushed/cramped in the voice line.

Hi st!

Well done! I really like the lyrics, vocal and production. :D

I'd be inclined to rethink two lines ("2 mimes" and "Its back to searching for our some / -one to love...") but that's just my opinion - a really terrific song.

All the best,

Trisha
