Being a member of multiple PROs

Post by markhatter » Tue Aug 21, 2018 11:43 pm

Hi,

I am coming across a lot of conflicting information about this so thought I'd ask on here. I'm based in Europe and am a member of PRS. However, most of the music I sign is in the US and the main library I use is with ASCAP.

Is it possible to join ASCAP as well as PRS? Some people seem to think you can only be a member of one and others say you can be a member of multiple PROs as long as they represent different territories.

I know that the PROs have agreements so you will get the royalties either way but is it more cost effective and quicker to get the royalties if you are with the same PRO as the music library (or at least a PRO in the same territory)

I'd love to hear what other members are doing.

Thanks
Mark

Ask your current PRO if you can exclude the US and go with ASCAP/BMI/SESAC for your U.S. royalties.

Thank you. Will this mean I will get royalties quicker?

Perhaps. Since the music is on US TV shows and is tracked by US PROs, the detections should be made and paid out from the US PRO. But like any other PRO, there is a lot of opaqueness behind the scenes that we do not see.
