Billie Eilish & FINNEAS Home Studio

Post by jdstamper » Mon Dec 09, 2019 9:33 am

Some pretty big things can come from a small studio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBJ914ha6LQ

My favorite part is at 1:48, the phrase "10,000 Hours" written on the wall :)

Wow! I would be SO claustrophobic in that setup! But it's easy to appreciate what he's saying about the immediacy (and, yeah, I noticed the 10,000 hours thing, too).

Having started recording back before things were on the computer, I can also feel the gratitude on where things are gone on the recording technology front. "Back in the day" I had a rack of MIDI modules and a couple of keyboards I used for both sounds and controllers, initially using a 8-track reel-to-reel, then 8 tracks of ADAT, then slowly moving more and more to the computer. GigaPiano, which was included in Cakewalk Pro Suite at one point, was a major revelation because I could finally replace my MKS-20 piano sound with something on the computer that sounded even better and responded more like a real piano. But nowadays, between NI KOMPLETE, Arturia V-Collection, and loads of other software instruments (see http://rickpaulmusic.com/equipment-and-software/ if you're curious on how severe a plugin junkie I am), I have way more toys available than I'd ever have been able to afford, no less fit, with physical instruments. And, yep, I even have that Mellotron he mentioned in the video (Mellotron V), and have used it in my recordings. :)

But pretty much everything I use now, aside from a microphone, 2 controller keyboards, a wind controller, my audio interface, some speakers, and an outboard mic preamp, is on the computer. So it cuts way down on the space factor compared to when I had the outboard MIDI gear fully populating a Mackie 32*8 mixer, etc. And it generates way less heat! :)

Yeah, it's a great self-made brother / sister success story
