Blame Himself
Very interested to hear what you guys think of my new work Blame Himself.
http://www.soundcloud.com/carlson-scott/blame-himself
The premise here is a girl who jumps from guy to guy (with overlaps), and the perspective is from one of the links in that chain who was blinded by the love but failed to see the pattern of behavior. And now he has a message for the next guy (but he's really just scolding himself for being so blind). At the end he tries to pull her back, but with no success.
Am I crazy to hear contemporary country here? I certainly didn't record it that way. Let me know what you guys think
Lyrics
You better tell him what you’re doing
I hope that he’s as dumb as I am
And when he’s hurting and you wont admit it
I know you’re sleeping sound at night
This all seems so unprecedented and you play it so cool
Throw those arms around me like you lost and found me
This all seems so unregimented and you’re being so cruel
Burning all your bridges as I sit there cringing
Oh he had it coming
And he can only blame himself
Oh he’s got it coming
And he can only blame himself
For believing you
Like I believed in you
You know I recall what it’s like to be there
And it felt so great
And now you’re leading me where I don't want to be
Let’s get it straight
This all looks oh so familiar you know I’ve seen this before
Falling out of touch and claiming your new savior
You seem more insecure than ever and the pictures show
When you realize you’re hanging on to something you don't know
Oh he had it coming
And he can only blame himself
Oh he saw it coming
And he can only blame himself
For believing you
Like I believed in you
He can only blame himself
For believing you
Like I believed in you
Why are you running so far away
Why does it have to be today
You still wont tell the truth
After everything I’ve done for you
You still wont leave him too
After everything I’ve done for you
And you can only blame yourself
And I will too
He can only blame himself
For believing you
Like I believed in you

Re: Blame Himself
Carlson,
Nice tune with a great vocal.
It's definitely got a contemporary sound. Maybe some John Mayer, but maybe not? It's familiar but not overtly, so I can't think a specific a la.
The only comment I can offer would be on the chorus lyrics. Listening to the first chorus I thought you don't need the 'And' as the line seemed rushed, so I thought it should read like this;
Oh he had it coming
He can only blame himself
Oh he’s got it coming
He can only blame himself
For believing you
Like I believed in you
However, after listening to the second chorus I thought it worked, so I don't know what that means!
There should definitely be a home for this somewhere, if TV and Film are what you're looking for. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words John. The phrasing on this one was difficult to lay down!

Hey Carlson,
Nice tune you got going here!
At first the words sounded cramped in at some points, maybe that's what John was hearing too.
The song just seems to need some getting used to.
First thing that came to my mind whilst listening was the Counting Crows. It's got a sort of alternative-rock sound to it.

Really liked it. Love your voice. This is why I'm doing instrumentals right now! I thought the timing stuff worked well once your ear got used to it. Kinda gave me the feeling the words were headed down a road themselves to somewhere. Closing montage song or album cut someday? Good luck!

Hey Carlson
I really enjoyed listening to your song. Nice production and as everyone else has noted, you have a great voice and very unique. I like how you have quite a few lyrics per line. Just look at people like Taylor Swift, especially her new song "Blank". She has a way of telling a story using a large amount of lyrics, which by default, creates a rhythm and tempo which gives it it's originality. Your song seems to have that same flavor, which I think makes it very contemporary.
I know that this is a small point, but at the very last line of your song, I felt like you should say " but I can only blame myself ". Sort of like the song " Margarittaville " where the singer finally confesses, that if anyone's to blame, it's himself. It makes the singer look like the hero in the situation and you always want the singer to look good.
Anyway, just my two cents. I think it is a great song just the way it is. Good luck with it.
