Bringing guitar to rally?

Post by TheRealPatrickAdams » Tue Oct 17, 2017 1:20 pm

Advice on bringing guitar on plane to the rally or will there be some available for open mic nights? I thought I heard from previous rallies that an acoustic would be available. This is my first rally and I would like to do one of the open mic sessions. Getting excited!

You might have a problem with an acoustic. If you have a flight case you could put it in baggage. I've seen guys bring them on board in a gig bag but I wouldn't count on it, they might make you put it in baggage. Bringing an electric in a gig bag is no problem, I've done it many times on many airlines, if it can't go in the overhead they'll put it in a closet or behind a seat. But I'd bet there will be lots of guitars already there. Good luck!

My advice, don't bring your favorite guitar!
I brought mine to my second Rally, as the night deepened and the alcohol was flowing, my guitar was repeatedly disrespected when I wasn't looking.
It came home with two new scratches and some broken strings.
For my third Rally I just brought the Uke and didn't share as much as I usually would...
If I bring an acoustic again it will be a "beater"
You know, the one that you take to the beach, sounds the same when you fill it up with a bucket of sand!

I used to bring mine and had similar experiences to Cass as far as guitar abuse by inebriated jamming folks. This will be the first year I'm not bringing it. And definitely don't bring one you care about a lot as far as scratches, damage, etc.

The open mics all supply guitars and keyboards so you don't need to bring one for that.

I always debate whether to bring an instrument but, since they are provided for the open mic, it seems wiser not to. Maybe we should just all bring uke's

Think I will leave mine at home. This trip is a learning experience for me and if the open mic sessions will have something available, I'll take my chances with that. Thanks for the replies.

I usually bring my 6-string uke-like guitar. If someone else wants to use it, I administer a breathalyzer test first. Not many pass. :)
