Can I submit AI rap? (I won't!)

Post by CTWF » Mon May 08, 2023 9:24 am

I have been on a several months music and TAXI forum hiatus. So, this might have been discussed in detail before.

---------------

With the recent Drake/TheWeeknd AI hit and with Uberduck's quite impressive abilities, I think an AI rap vocal can possibly be pushed to a level suitable for certain types of production.

If I use the voice of a rapper/vocalist who has given a license to Uberduck and Uberduck then gives a commercial license to me, suddenly a rap vocal is just another instrument in my DAW and I should be able to submit such tracks to libraries.

To be clear, I am talking about a completely legal situation, and the question would be, would libraries still have a problem with it?

Admittedly, I do not exactly know how the Uberduck licenses work, but I would be surprised if they were not allowing that type of use in their commercial subscriptions.

Thoughts?

Good luck getting a computer to sign a WFH.
Write the rap yourself and hire the singer.

An elaborate plugin does not sign a WFH, either.

That is exactly what I want to avoid.

AI is a legal minefield right now and probably will be for a long time. Don't do it. I don't think any library would take a chance on this, they are very skiddish (rightly so) about getting into an infringement lawsuit.

I know you want to avoid hiring a rapper but if you create your temp track with AI and then collab with a rapper here to re-sing, it would cost you either a co-write split or a relatively small fee. And then there's sites like AirGigs for a WFH rapper.

Your temp track with the AI vocal could show off how good (hopefully) the song is, which is valuable for attracting potential co-writers.

Best,
:D Casey

I'm sure you " can " ...it's more a questions of whether you " should ". If the only creative thing you're doing is supplying a prompt then can you really claim any copyrite ?

As you would have written neither the words nor the melody then what if anythign would you actually " own " that you can sign over to a library ?

And if you can do it, then so can the next guy - who will end up with a very similar result to yours. Unlike if you actually wrote and got a rapper to perform it, there's nothing unique.

I definitly see this, and would not be surprised if it's already happening.

It depends on how you use it. Uberduck can be fed with the lyrics, so you can take your own, or only use theirs as an inspiration. Then with the rap itself, you will still have to process it and it was your rhythm and you might have to tune it into a small melody. So, the AI is a tool. Just like a Formula 1 driver "wins" a race, even though he is nothing without a combustion engine and his team.

Uberduck specifically states that its AI voices cannot be used commercially. This would certainly include sync music.

For a company whose main product seem to be 5,000+ AI voices, this is a quite bad business proposition. I wonder what their plans are.

EDITed to add: "Uberduck Studio commercial use voices" is included already on their smallest price plan "creator" ( https://app.uberduck.ai/pricing ). Sounds to me like Uberduck is all about commercial use of AI voices, no?

Does this mean that a rap verse which was created through my prompt still belongs to Uberduck? But what if Uberduck just produced something, that is very similar to what I already had on paper in front of me when I prompted the AI?

Also, does "using service" automatically include "posting"? I don't think so.

Sounds ike they still own whatever it produces and can reproduce it any way they see fit. Total non-starter for Sync IMHO
