Re: collaborating via the internet
Quote:I have a technical question: What does the drummer need in terms of a file? For example, if I were using ProTools LE, would I send him/her the entire ProTools file or just an audio file of my demo. Similarily, what do I get in return? A ProTools file with let's say 8 independent drum tracks so I can further mix and process them?Curious,LarryHi Larry, You can get to Phil's process page, by clicking on the 2nd snare drum from the left at the top of the page. I'm sure you can see how he works. email him to answer some questions if ya want. He's much nicer than I am. http://www.e-studio-drummer.com/main.htm

Re: collaborating via the internet
The drums cost me $135, if you want to know who I used message me privatley, I know it's no big deal, just a professional courtesy. With regards to what you send/receive its .wav files. I actually emailed an mp3 of the rough mix as a reference, then did a mix without the drum machine and transfered that as a stereo .wav file. What I got back was both a stereo mix and the 8 individual drum tracks to mix on my own if I chose to so do so. I used the stereo mix he sent. I'm having it mastered Thursday (10-18) then I'll post em all. This is all for a 3 song EP for the Rally.

Re: collaborating via the internet
I do TONS of this kind of thing in both directions. I do plenty of production and mixing for clients all over the place, and hire guys that have their own recording capability as well. I produced some tracks with a great guitar player 500 miles away in LA on Monday for a client in Nashville. And since she signed off on the demo, I'll likely do bass and drums for the final record the same way because the budget is small enough that I can't travel and rent studios like I'd like to.

Quote:I'e been collaborating over the internet since 2004 and have met many friends doing it and had a lot of fun along the way. There are also over the internet demo services of various kinds, like the one you used, and I have used one or two with good results. In the case of collaborating co-writers, I always get a co-writing agreement signed; in the case of demo services, I always get a work for hire/master release signed. You didn't post a link to your song Hummin'birdREPLY TO HUMMINGBIRD: Dear Vikki:Perhaps you'll remember my posts about a month ago that dealt with the question of the advisability of membership in a PRO. To make a long story short, after some deliberation I eventually joined BMI where I now have 33 "works" registered. The TAXI community comment that carried the day: "You do want to get paid for your work, don't you?" Hard to argue with that! Now, your having mentioned "agreements" and "releases" in your recent reply to diogenes in this thread prompts me to ask: Do you know of a website or other source that might provide "forms" that one can download and ask a collaborator (co-producer, co-composer, lyricist, etc.) to sign. Then, the fully executed form can be submitted to the PRO (or elsewhere) to provide evidence of agreement/collaboration. If so, I'd be most grateful if you could provide relevant URLs or other information. Thanks in advance for your help.Alan (backtalkunlimited)

Re: collaborating via the internet
Picking up where I left off on Oct. 17th (vide supra): While surfing ProBoards this evening, I happened to notice that the issue of "agreements" and "releases" mentioned in my previous posting might appear to have been left hanging. Just for the record, I should note that subsequently I contacted Hummingbird, at which time she provided some very valuable information. In particular, she pointed me toward John Braheny's excellent book, "The Craft and Business of Songwriting", now in its 3rd edition (ISBN: 1-58297-466-7). In a nutshell, I believe that this outstanding book is a must-have for any newbie or wannabe songwriter or arranger who hopes to market his or her music. This inexpensive softcover book can be purchased online from amazon.com or from any of a number of online booksellers, e. g., www.alibris.com or www.abebooks.com. Happy reading, and thanks again, Vikki.Alan (backtalkunlimited)

Is it true that if I use your services, I would have no problems with getting you to do master signoffs? Also, I write mainly country, (but also some R & B and alternative) so do you work with a lot of country writers? If you would like to PM me with this info, that would be fine. I just tried to access your link, and it won't open for me.

Re: collaborating via the internet
Just a note that I've been working with Dan for years and his work is awesome. He has done my recordings of What a World, Painfully Single, Adrenaline, Blue Moment, Physical World, I Had Lunch With Your Wife Today, Frankly Scarlet and more. I owe any success I have so far to his production work. In addition to the samples he listed, if you visit any of my websites, you will hear his work. He also produced full CDs for a few friends of mine.I mentioned at the rally that Pat & Pete Luboff gave me a big "thumbs up" on my song, "Blue Moment"... If you didn't know already, he is a big part of the reason for that.People often ask me who does my demos. It is Dan Marfisi. Casey

Re: collaborating via the internet
Thanks Charles. For country, you'd probably be best served by the production companies in Nashville. I can do the west-coast Americana but the row people can smell L.A. My wheelhouse is mostly pop, rock & electronica. Still, there are times when an outside approach comes across as fresh and might help create notice. It's a gut call...
