Coltrane's Giant Steps as an "a la"-- wild.
Regarding the Dispatch #D170418JI request for ORIGINAL JAZZ STANDARDS-Style INSTRUMENTALS, it asks to avoid submitting anything that’s too avant-garde or experimental. Although it's fairly standard fare nowadays, it was quite experimental back in the day of its release. That said, I wouldn't think that a music supe would want something quite as notey as John Coltrane's solo on Giant Steps!

Yeah, I thought the same kind of thing. Similar thing with the Kind of Blue album too, it was definitely not mainstream for that era.
