Confused about Publishing rights

Post by tomyco » Mon Mar 05, 2018 11:22 am

I had some of my songs accepted by a music library. It was a non exclusive agreement. Are they now considered the publisher? My understanding is that as a non exclusive you can send our songs to any music library. If lets say, three libraries accept the same songs under a non exclusive agreement, who owns the publishing rights?

Thanks!

Usually they re-title, so that the publishing for the placement one library gets will be paid to that library.

Whilst I have a load of re-titled cues I was never sure about songs.

We've only got one song signed up anywhere for now as we've concentrated on instrumentals so they have the original title but it seems to me that song titles can be quite important as they are designed to be memorable..often the same as the hook of the song. But you would just change them anyway ?

Thanks for the replies but this is my issue.

I am very close to getting a license and need to make sure I fill out the Schedule A correctly.

I have sent some of my songs to three different music libraries under a non exclusive agreement. One has retitled the songs, so there is no issue there. The license

My understanding is that if Music library XYZ pitches my song and gets a license, XYZ would be the publisher. For songs I send directly to a Clearing house, Taxi, Broadjam, Hit License etc and receive a license through them, I would be the publisher and have all publishing rights and XYZ Music library would have no publishing rights. I believe this is correct but I want to make sure I do everything correct.

If the license happens it would not be through any of the three Music libraries I sent my music to. I went through one of the companies I listed above, So would I be the publisher and have all publishing rights?

Thanks for all replies.
