Contemporary Version of "Oh Santa" - Ears please!

Post by LamarPecorino » Mon Apr 19, 2021 11:34 am

Here is a link to a contemporary version of "Oh Santa". We were going for something marketable to Nickelodeon rather than the 60's retro vibe of the original. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Hey Lamar,
Thanks for sharing. I love the bass line in your track and the track is really clean.

The track does not really sound "contemporary" to me. I guess it depends on what is meant by "contemporary" though. If it is meant to be "current" by "contemporary" then the production feels more early 90's to me.

Maybe it would be a good fit as a "light adult contemporary" kind of thing though. I think I remember a listing from a few years ago that was asking for "light adult contemporary".

The "s" in Santa are sometimes pretty harsh (they sound doubled and could be better aligned).

You have definitely updated it from the 60's by at least 30 years.

I hope something in the above helps. I defer to those that know better.

Johnny

I agree with Johnny the production and mix are not contemporary

The arrangement , and particularly the amount of reverb used are more 80s than today. The drums especially have an 80's / early 90's drum loop vibe.

Thanks for listening and writing, Johnny and Mark. I'll pass on the comments to the person that created the new track and mix.

Since this production isn't contemporary/current enough, can you suggest a couple of reference tracks that might in the right vein. When I had "Too Ghoul For School" revamped, I suggested Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" as a reference track. When I asked for "Oh Santa" to revamped, I didn't offer any reference tracks.
