Country Lyrics "Thanks Dad"

Post by songmaster » Sun Oct 31, 2021 5:37 am

I thought I would write a country song ( lyrics only ). Any advice is appreciated. I'm on the edge of getting it recorded or not.

Tom

Thanks Dad

My dad said son don't ever drive too fast
You might hit someone's mail box on a slippery patch
Never spin your tires on your neighbors grass
Cause he'll be knockin on your door

Don't go soapin windows out on Halloween
Don't be drinkin whiskey till you turn eighteen
And don't be getting vengence cause your neighbors mean
With firecrackers on his porch
I'm here cause that's what fathers are for...and I said

Thanks dad for all that good advice
And thanks for telling me the story of your life
This ain't the town of Mayberry in '65
And I'm not little Opie with that dopey smile
And thanks dad, yeah I owe you one
Cause you remember how it was when you were young
Next time I'm in trouble guess who brought me up
Hey, you and me we ain't so bad...so thanks dad

Then he looked at me with a sheepish grin...and said
Just want to keep you from the messes I got in
Don't want the preacher sleepin as you spill your sins
Cause the list is just too darn long
Your mom and me are only tryin to raise you right
I know you need to see your crazy friends at night
And somewhere in the mix must be a girl you like
Emotions can be running strong
I'm just trying to help you along...and I said

Chorus

Bridge

Now a days it's not the same like way back when
Every questions answered on the internet
That's the way it is , I don't mean to offend
Oh by the way, can you spot me a ten?

My old-guy 2 cents: just looking at it - it's very wordy... which is okay for a Classic Country song that's telling a relatable story.
I'd be tempted to swap V1 & V2 - the opening of V2 is stronger as an immediate attention-grabber. It's mischievous fun, and more interesting.

Any of that story that you can still tell, with less words for us impatient old folks - :? 8-) - the better.
And - if you can set it to music that makes the song not more than 3:15 long... you're in my ballpark.

Looking forward to hearing it set to some fiddle & steel!!
There's certainly room for more honoring songs - for Fathers' Day, even.

HTH, Cheers.

Hey, thanks Peter! Yes, it might be a tad wordy, but I was imagining it a little more up tempo, but not quite rap . I will take a look at trading v1 for v2, you never know what might work. It's all a good exercise anyway ;)

also - for what it's worth: the "Don't go soapin'..." line, without using the word "you" - still implies that you're speaking to your audience right from the start...
and the "me" (my dad) personal perspective joins the more intimate part of the story after they've been included.
Sounds like something Robin Frederick might say, eh? LOL
OH the VRR starts soon, too!!

Yes, I think an easy fix for "don't go soaping windows" would be to put an "and" "don't go soaping windows" because I already started the first verse with " My dad said son, don't ever drive to fast" so it would be a continuation of the conversation ( didn't mean rhyme)
Also I think Robin Fredricks would say, this song would not fly in the country market because it is not about a relationship between a man and a woman. Those are the most popular songs. But I felt like writing this one anyway.
