Creating a Playlist for the Rally

Post by RealPickle » Sat Oct 05, 2024 10:30 am

Hi all,
This was discussed briefly in another thread but I'm still a bit unsure about what to do, so I'm creating a new topic, hoping to get some good feedback.

I'm going to make business cards to give out at the rally with a QR code linking to my music, but I'm really questioning what that code should link to. I have Disco and currently have 7 playlists with a total of about 50 tracks on there. Should I pick what I think is my strongest playlist/genre and link that? Should I create a "greatest hits" playlist with 8-10 of my strongest tracks? Should I Rick Roll people with the code? Something else?

Help!

Thanks,
Geoff

If you have a website and all socials are on it just link it to your website, if not see what others suggest here.

If you're not sure, just link to MY website!

You could make a specific Disco playlist for the rally, a sampler of your BEST work, probably not more than around 6 tracks (just a guideline, not a hard rule). Keep in mind that once you create that playlist and give out business cards pointing to it, you don't want to ever remove it (probably not even change it), because someone might not go there for a long time. If these are vocal songs, include lyrics. Disco also supports ways to make your playlist the most professional looking with a background, bio, etc. https://youtu.be/4FoAzlu_7uk?si=ZcUtwuF-5ihVWw3U

Thanks both of you for your input. I do have a website but I figure a library owner is mostly just interested in going straight to my music. I wonder about just linking to my disco page generally? Or I guess I could just do my website music page? (As opposed to the home landing page)

I'm probably overthinking it

I'm not sure what you mean by going to your disco page generally. You would have to create an artist page or I don't think what you are mentioning exists(?). You can use your website music page, a disco playlist, or a disco artist page. Whatever you use, it should only have your best work, as I mentioned, and remain a constant for many months (or even years) after the rally. Think of it this way. You are going to a job interview as an artist (paintings). They ask you to bring some samples of your work. What would you bring?

Does that help?

Yeah, I had thought you could link directly to all of your disco playlists at the same time, but perhaps not? Either way it doesn't matter because that's essentially what my website music page is anyway. So I guess my main question comes down to, is it smarter to link to all of my music/playlists (via my website) and let the visitor choose what they want to listen to, or curate 6ish tracks for them and link to that? And Casey, it seems like your take is it's better to curate 6 tracks, which I'm amenable to. I'm just curious if others have a different take.

Thanks again for your input!

I think you can send a list of playlists but not sure if you need to make an artist page for that. Disco can do a lot of things I haven't done yet. I'm asking a friend who sent me something cool.

Geoff,

I'm doing the exact same thing as you, so thanks for asking the question.

What I've decided to do is the Casey Approach ( :D ) = about six or seven of my best pieces that you access on Disco directly from the QR code...

If I speak with someone, and they want to hear something from a specific area (like Tension, Emotional, etc.) then I'll send them a link to that specific playlist on Disco. So the playlists will be there with the specific albums of material, but for introductions, it will be a short list of what I consider my best to date.

I THINK there is a way to keep the same link, but edit the playlist. So I plan to keep the link up for years, but I may update the list (if i can) with newer pieces as time goes on.

Glad I'm not the only one!

I think I've maybe landed on that as well. I thought about putting my website url on the card so people can visit if they want, but the QR will link to a curated list. I agree with you that I'm pretty sure if you create a playlist for this purpose, the link stays constant even if you edit the list, which is crucial. You never know when you'll write the next banger that needs to go on the list :)

When you edit a playlist on Disco, the link does not change. Also, you can make a playlist of playlists, I found out. So, if you have multiple genres, you could have multiple playlists at the one link.

If you are using Disco, they have some really cool features I never explored-- artist page, presentation on playlists, etc.

:D Casey
