D080513TV - INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSITIONS/SONGS

Post by stansongman » Wed May 07, 2008 1:15 am

Has anyone successfully pitched for any listings like this? I could use a little advice as to what to submit. I don't really have a lot of canned cues. I've got a few film scores I did for some short films in my portfolio. On top of that I have a few instrumental pieces I have submitted for production libraries and things. They all demonstrate my composition/orchestration/engineering capabilities, but they are written and timed for a specific film, so they're not necessarily cut and paste into another work. Do you think that's what they're looking for, or are they looking for samples to commission a composer to write all new original cues for the documentary?Too bad you can't include a one paragraph blurb in your submission to explain/market yourself.....

It would be much easier to respond if you could post the listing itself...

Sorry, hear it is:New Listing INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSITIONS/SONGS are needed by the Music Supervisor and the Producer of a Feature Documentary a la “What The Bleep Do We Know”. The Music Supervisor will be screening this material himself. He’s looking for a variety of instrumental music along the lines of the soundtracks from “American Beauty”, “The Sixth Sense”, “The Fifth Element”, etc. (i.e. James Horner, James Newton Howard, Eric Serra). He may choose one great composer if the style is perfect. The budget is TBA, but there will be modest Master/Sync fees paid if your cues are used and an all in budget if a single composer is selected. Broadcast quality is absolutely necessary for this listing. MIDI is okay here, but the tones should be very authentic-sounding and convincing. There is no suggested time frame for these submissions, but please keep in mind that he’ll be using them to determine what your full capabilities might be. A short piece that is written and performed well can be just as effective as a lengthy piece... be sure to display your talents in the scope of your composition and the recording/production. Please submit two to three songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened by the Music Supervisor here at TAXI on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES - and must be received by Noon PST on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. I decided to play it like this: I've submitted a couple of pieces from the new film I'm working on, they are demos and may or may not make it in the film anyway. Since I've retained publishing, I could license them to this client as cues if they want them. But in my mind I'm billing myself as the score composer. I've also included a Newman-esque piece that I submitted for a different listing and got a return on.Here's what I submitted:http://www.taximusic.com/song.php?song_ ... ream=1Good luck!Mazz

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed the pieces you're submitting. I think I'll do a few montages based on some film work I've been doing as well.

That's moving from Dminor (dorian) to Bb Lydian (basically just changing the B natural to Bb).Stan, hope I didn't hijack the thread! Sorry if I did! Mazz
