Distribution Tunecore or distrokid?

Post by pveniot » Mon Nov 16, 2020 4:16 pm

Hi Taxi people
Hope you're all fine and healthy.

Just a question for those who have used these services?

Is it worth it
Tunecore seems pricey, Distrokid a bit 'teenaged''

I am planning an album release in 2021...
Already have an album on Spotify and CD Baby...

Anyways any input would be greatly appreciated

Best
Pierre

I use DistroKid because their business model suits me better, I like the idea I can release as much music as I want, and just pay a single, yearly fee. Some of their extras may be seen as pricey/unnecessary, though, i.e. YouTube Content ID

You need better criteria to assess these services. Here is a list with pros and cons;
https://aristake.com/digital-distribution-comparison/

Also include Bandcamp if it is important to sell merc with your releases.

I use Digidi, http://digidi.org/ because I can release as a label with several artist brands without added fees, and also with monetized video distribution. You may have your own specific needs and choose differently for that reason.

Take your time to pick, its a jungle with all the hidden fees ect.

Whoever you choose, be careful what boxes you check. If you go with Tunecore, CDBaby, etc. make sure you do not elect to have them be a publishing administrator (I think they get 15% to admin) of your tracks. If you that, many music libraries will not accept your tracks because someone else has part of the publishing.
I used Distrokid to release songs to Spotify, etc. and was very pleased with the process and their customer service. But I have not point of comparison.

Good luck!

Also, DistroKid mentioned that they do not act as a publishing entity, when I asked them that.
However, opting into their YouTube Content ID option gives Audiam the role of Content ID manager for the music used in YT videos

Thanks Casey, Distrokid seems to be a favorite here. I am aware of checking the box to make them publishing admin. We talked about it sooo many times on TAXI TV.

Stay safe

Thanks again, Don't know much about Audiam, will to my research.
Will Audiam interfere with eventual publishing deals by music production librairies for content on YT?
