Does anyone post their music on YouTube?

Post by matcreedon » Sun May 20, 2018 9:38 pm

Hi All,

I have a large catalogue my music on YouTube, which I am using for Taxi submissions.

If a music library wants my music, will there be a problem with licensing?

I don't have any music in a library yet and I don't want to spoil my chances of a potential placement.

I would love to hear if anyone else is doing this or can see a potential problem that I cant : )

Cheers
Mat

If you are offered a non-exclusive deal, it shouldn't be a problem. An exclusive deal might get a little sticky depending on their terms. As long as you control the music and can take it down if/when you sign a deal, I'd think you're good.

* Purely my opinion. I am not a legal expert of any kind, although I did file for a divorce without a lawyer and that worked out.

Hi Mat.
Well - while I didn't think I was making a conscious effort to do so - when I had my first 10-song CD manufactured by CD Baby,
the tracks got posted on YouTube by TuneCore.
There's no music-video thing to accompany any of them - each song just appears with the CD cover photo - like this:

No exactly aggressive marketing. :? :P

I also use YouTube for my songs. I don't see any issue with this except if something gets picked up as exclusive. I figure if that happens, I can easily take any of those songs down. I've also been having some fun putting videos to my songs.

My guess is because YouTube has millions of tv/movie clips already uploaded. SoundCloud, I doubt they have 'S3E4 CSI Orlando soundtrack' already sitting there.

Likely the listers aren't posting the music clips.

I've uploaded a number of tunes to YouTube over the years as I like to add visual content when practical. I've also done the same with other artist's songs I enjoy. I've only had a couple of forwards and 0 placements with Taxi so I can't say if there would be any issues with licensing, though I doubt it as long as you own all the rights. The problem I’ve had is with YouTube and bogus copyright violation claims that I’ve had to challenge in order to get overturned. I think there’s con artists on YT who try to pull this off on a regular basis.

What happened to the video?

UPDATE: Ok, I see it now. Must have been something at my end. Nice tune.

If you're artist-track, have a band and a following, (or at least a following) you absolutely should be on Youtube, but also all the paid streaming sites. As an artist, your streaming presence is more important than having a record deal, and it can significantly affect your bottom line.
