Does it fit the listing? Posty Refs

Post by SawtoothPorter » Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:54 am

I would never have guessed that I'd have anything close to a listing like this...but here we are miles down the road...

Do you think it fits? Do I need to treat to vocals more to get there? Different instrumentation?

My track:

The listing:
MAINSTREAM-SOUNDING URBAN POP SONGS with Male Vocals are needed by a boutique Music Library with tons of credits in big Feature Films and countless TV Shows and Commercials. They’re looking for Mid-Tempo Songs that could be found on a playlist with the following references our client gave us:

“Psycho” by Post Malone ft. Ty Dolla $ign

“Better Now” by Post Malone

TAXI TIP: They're looking to hear songs that have a mellow energy and have hooks /choruses that are vocalized in the vein of Post Malone.

Please send A+ Songs that have a Contemporary Pop structure and a current Urban appeal/flavor to them. Your song should have catchy melodies, a fresh, mellow beat, and an unforgettable chorus. You can sing or rap your submission, as long as your vocal performance is solid, confident, and has plenty of attitude.

Nice job.

I would consider emphasizing the upper mid / top end of your vocal vs. all the other bright sound sources in the track. Which might mean cutting some not just boosting.

And I would consider staying in the half time feel for the choruses knowing what the refs do.

Hey Andy,

Do you think I can achieve the half-time feel (BTW you are the second person to tell me about this...since it makes dancing to the song weird haha) by instrumentation alone...in other works can it work with the chorus vocal that is in place if the rhythm continues to the half-time feel?

Thanks!
Elliott

Yeah just think like future bass. Keep the same feel. Half the tempo on the drums of what it is right right now.

Do what Andy says.

I think it's worth the $5.

I just wanted to say I am digging this song. It's quite an enjoyable tune all around. Good luck!

Btw Elliott - you have AutoTune? Not to necessarily tune the vocal but because it gives every piece of audio run through it a certain sheen. AutoTune, not Melodyne or waves tune.

Listen to the refs again. Lots of pop tunes have a similar thing.

Yeahh...I know he has a lot of it on the refs. Luckily I have some time with this track.

I don't have autotune but have been thinking of going for it. Maybe this will push me over.

Yeah there is some - but its the sheen. Listen for example to the male voice on the Chainsmokers "Closer" album version vs. the live version. Besides being better in tune - its a certain sheen and almost aggressive distortion kind of sound. Could also be some other effect like Aphex Aural Exciter in combo but you can figure that out.
