Re: Does this sound finished???
Hi Cass
I think Len is on to something with the comb filtering comment.
The acoustic sounds brittle with no warmth/fullness. also the high end component of the reverb that is on it is enhancing the clickiness of the pick.
I'm not in love with the bass part, I'd rather hear something that lets you know you have entered the groove when that section hits @ 1:13
(But that's just me, I think about bass way too much)
Great composition, very grand and epic!
I hope you are enjoying becoming an engineer!
Nice work, ciao!-Rob

Re: Does this sound finished???
hey, i'm not only digging cass's song but all the knowledge here! can't really add anything. i don't know many recording/mixing tricks, but what little i do know is getting confirmation by hearing you audio wizards speak.
cass, i like the way the song keeps moving forward with just subtle dynamic shifts. at first the long intro bugged me, but then i realized maybe this is intentional due to intended end use(?). maybe what magne said about how to slowly build it up front will keep that forward movement going early on.
well done and cheers!

"(I used two mics, an MXL-V69 and a 57)
I've been thinking that I should just redo the acoustic with a dif mic setup but I'll go thru the video first and see if I can do it from the captain's chair."
Yes, the two mics if not set up properly can do the same thing, I'm not sure that video really goes into that, it's more about the acoustical properties affecting comb filtering.
M/S, mid-side processors may also help in this situation. Brainworx is strong in this suite. They have a phase meter incorporated into a couple of their plugins, the mono maker allows you to set the threshold where all bass below a certain freq is moved to the middle, and a stereo control that allows you to widen or narrow the stereo field to keep the phase meter in the green.

Thanks Rob N Richard N Len N the rest ah ya,
Will absolutely check out the processor
Just made a mix that I could listen all the way through with out hemorrhaging!
This is a personal song/piece, not intended for a placement!(says the fool who forgot life(me))
The plan is to get better, help who I can, and finish this album/cd/digital, then work on listings...

Re: Does this sound finished???
Hey Cass,
The bass definitely sits better in the mix on this one... you can hear all of the bass notes and the pulsing kick comes through, and the two aren't fighting for a place in the sonic landscape. Nice!
I never had any issue with the guitar sound in the first place, and I still think it sounds good.
Can't wait to hear your next tune :o)

Thanks Ron!
lol... then it's not finished!!!
Someone in this group (who shall remain nameless for the present) wants to take a stab at mixing it.
I'm prepping the files now.

Re: Does this sound finished???
I know you're not asking about this, but what kind of listing are you wanting to submit to? Cass, you know I really like this!, But, is it typical for an intro to go on for such a long time? Or is it an intro? I'm a simple man... I honestly am curious. Is that typical with background intrumental tv scores? It may be...
My only other concern would be the bass drum. again, not that you asked... Sounds a tad thumpy. Could it be more organic? Real?
Thought the acoustic was from heaven!

Re: Does this sound finished???
Thanks G!
It was never intended as anything other than what I was hearing in my head converted to music...
It is for the album I'm wrapping up before the Road Rally. (13 tunes)
While working on it I joined Taxi to see where the future is for my music/production
Once finished I want to focus on writing for Taxi listings
but first... this whole engineering MADNESS...
I love it but should have been more serious about it years ago. (the engineering)
Other than demos at home, my studio experience was never in the captain's chair.
The musician's chair 'twas I
I have 2 kicks going, one from the live drummer and a doubling sample.
still trying to get it right
I also hear way too much sub in my right ear(Toms)
Morning Listen and the acoustic sounds like sharp knives and a bag of forks to me.....
