Ears Please - 50's Rock & Roll

Post by cosmicdolphin » Mon Aug 21, 2017 7:56 am

Just finishing up on this one, bit out of my wheelhouse..went with the Johnny B Goode vibe and tried to make it sound old. 8-)

RETRO-Sounding 1960’s-Style ROCK N’ ROLL SONGS with Male Vocals are needed for an (up to) $7,500, NON-Exclusive, Direct-to-Supervisor placement in a Popular TV Show on a Big Cable Network. They’re looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs that could be found on a playlist with acts like (but not limited to) Elvis Presley, Wayne Cochran, Chuck Berry, etc., etc., etc. Please listen to the references to get yourself in the general stylistic ballpark of what they need for this TV Show:

“Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj0Rz-uP4Mk

“Last Kiss” by Wayne Cochran: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKDMRZv4SYc

“Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8JULmUlGDA

Note: If your song is chosen, it could also be used on the TV Show Soundtrack album!

Please submit well-crafted Songs that are in the general style of the references above. Your submissions should have great musicianship, great melodies, and a chorus that’s really solid. Your submissions can be actual vintage masters recorded in the late or early 1960’s, or they can be songs recently recorded and just inspired by that era.

TAXI Tip: Lyric themes about love and forgiveness will work best.

Universal lyrics that don’t have specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity will likely be more usable than lyrics that have those details. Do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

The estimated license fee for this use is (up to) $7,500, depending on the ultimate placement. This is a Non-Exclusive, Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement, so you’ll keep 100% ownership of your Copyright and Master Recording, plus you’ll also get 100% of the Sync Fee and any applicable performance royalties. You must own or control your Copyright and Master Recording to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit 1-3 Songs online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than 11:59PM (PDT), on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017. TAXI #S170822RR

I dig what you've done! :D

From my perspective in the peanut gallery...
I was wondering if they would lean towards a mix that has a slight more stereo vibe to it???
From the three ala's... Last Kiss has a slight reverb giving it just a touch of stereo...
I would also dig out your voice from the "band" and give it a little more depth/mid to low range
Right now it registers right in the highZ range of everything else...

The tune is great and I give it a Plus One! :D

Thanks Cass it's a tough call because many of those records were released in mono and that's part of the charm..we were going more for the Chuck Berry fee...It doesn't really say in the listing..I guess I could make my slapback reverb stereo instead of mono.

My buddy wasn't happy with his bass part after I added some swing to the drums lol...so I will revisit the vocal settings when I slot that in later..Cheers

On a quick listen I thought it was all really well done... definitely gets that old-school rock'n'roll vibe and the songwriting and lyrics definitely fit the era.

Then only thing that stuck out as a little off to me if the very first snare hit. Upon first listen I heard that and immediately thought "Oh no, to drums are going to sound way to modern for the listing!", but then the song kicked in and the rest of the drums were perfect. I'm not sure if it is a mix/level issue or if it needs a high shelf on the eq to make it a little less bright?

Good luck with this one! I look forward to seeing your post in the forwards section in a month or so :)

Sounds great! :D
My favorite sound/feel starts at 1:35 with the distant guitar, that section sells it for me!!!

Yeah it's funny how many modern VST's it takes to sound old

I really like the song! It's spot on to the reference without being too close as a clone, although the Chuck Berry lick at the beginning of the breakdown may be a little too on the nose.

I could stand for the drums to be further up on the mix, however. Speaking of drums, what drum library are you using for this? NI's Abbey Road drummer has a 1950's or a 1960's kit that would be spot on for this.

P.S. If I were working on this cue, I'd shoot for the Back to the Future version of "Johnny B. Goode" for the mix.
