EDM Genra Mania!

Post by VeryFewPeople » Sat Dec 09, 2017 3:06 pm

There was a recent Taxi TV episode which was focused on identifying the genre of various songs, many of which fit the broad category of “electronic music”. This got me doing a little digging as this is a genre that I am becoming more interested in. According to Wikipedia, there are roughly 250 distinct genres of electronic music:

This compares to about 60 genres of country music (“Red Dirt” anyone?). What is surprising, is that according to the same source, electronic music actually began in Egypt in the the 1940s. In the US, electronic music began with the Drone, Dub and Ambient sub-genres that began in the 1960s.

Many of these genres have evolved and/or split into various sub-genres, while some were primarily a local phenomenon without much wider appeal. There also might be some over-classification going on here, so I doubt if there is anywhere near 250 active genres. Many genres, however, appear very active. If you care to do some listening, the next link is an easy way to do so. There are about 60 sub-reddits under “electronic music” where you can sample as many genres:

Careful with the “Ambient Music” though, I fell asleep for 9 hours on that!

So… to anyone who is more familiar with this music:

1) What are the top in-demand genres?

2) What are the top in-demand genres excluding the output of celebrity DJ / producers?

3) Does anyone have a time machine so I can go back and buy up a bunch of those analog electronic do-dads? (If your time machine is limited to only a year or two then please snag me a few of those G** Dang bitcoins!)

Cheers!
