Feedback for Celtic listing attempt

Post by mikemichnya » Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:07 pm

Wrote this song many years ago when I realized that you could take a joke and turn it into a song. I added the chorus, and I'm not sure if it works (or if it's even necessary) I realize I'm breaking a couple rules (it's got names, and it's an old song for a new listing). I'm not sure if it works for the world music listing below, or if the quality of the recording is even good enough. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

MALONEY'S CHALLENGE
words and music by Michael A. Michnya

Pat stopped inside a little pub -
‘Maloney's’ it were called -
To have a pint of bitters,
And there upon the wall
He spied a sign that read,
'Ye can have this pot o' gold
If ye best Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.'

What is Maloney's Challenge?
Pat inquired of the barkeep,
I've half a mind to test me self
If it's not too steep.
Sure, and I could put to good use
What's inside that pot o' gold,
I might take Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.

The barkeep chuckled to himself
And then from side to side
He shook his head and said,
It's a fool’s errand if you try.
A hundred men or more
Have failed to win that pot o' gold.
Will ye take Maloney's Challenge
Once for all?

Maloney’s Challenge, Maloney’s Challenge
Who will take Maloney’s Challenge?
A pot o’ gold awaits
Who will take Maloney’s Challenge?

It costs ten bob to try your luck
And three tests you must pass.
Each new one that you face
Shall be harder than the last.
If you're still standing at the end
You'll have earned your pot o' gold
If you best Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.

First, drink a shot of pepper juice
Without grimace or exclamation;
Then pull a tooth from our junkyard dog
Without a bit o' hesitation;
Then satisfy the landlady -
And she's ninety eight years old -
And you'll best Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.

Pat thought it over for a moment
And then he shook his head,
AThe entry fee is fair enough
But I'll decline the bet.
I've had me share of challenges
And I know when to fold.
I'll not take Maloney's Challenge
After all.

Repeat chorus

Pat had his pint of bitters,
And then he had another.
From supper until closing
Pat had several pints an hour.
Thus fortified and just before
The barkeep gave last call,
Pat took Maloney's Challenge
After all.

We punter's cheered him on
As he laid his ten bob down.
He drained that shot of pepper juice
And never cracked a frown.
Inside we heard the yelps
From that junkyard dog and thought,
He might best Maloney's Challenge
After all.

Pat came in from the alley
And said, "That didn't hurt a bit.
Now show me the old lady
And I'll get on with it.
I'll pull her tooth so quickly
She won't even know it's gone..."
Ah, but that weren't Maloney's Challenge
After all!

Repeat chorus

I've one last verse to share with you
And that's the epilogue.
Pat hasn't been the same
Since he had Maloney's dog.
And Maloney, she's not been the same
Since she had her tooth pulled,
Thus ends Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.

Maloney’s Challenge, Malloney’s Challenge
Thus ends Maloney's Challenge
Once for all.

Hi Michael - The link you posted works for you but not for others. You need to substitute "members" for "my" and your member name for "artist" in the link you have. Like in green below:

Code: Select all

https://www.taxi.com/members/mikeamoriello/songs/KFwa-J_yTiG3SYJgvkB1Gg-maloney-s-challenge
I had to put it in a code box to display it fully. It gets abbreviated like this when displayed as a working link:

https://www.taxi.com/members/mikeamorie ... -challenge

Also, the link in your signature (https://www.taxi.com/mikeamoriello) doesn't work. You need to add "members/" before "mikeamoriello"

Good luck with the song! I'm not sure having a name in it is a problem in this case, since it is somewhat generic and fits the style. One of the references has Galway in it, which to me is more specific than Maloney's Pub -- which could be just about anywhere from Boston to Belfast. On the down side, I didn't buy your vocal as authentically Irish.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the very helpful feedback! I wasn't sure if I could get away with my vocal on this one, and I especially appreciate learning the correct way to post my taxi signature and links to songs.
Best regards,

IMHO this one falls a little short of meeting several of the requirements specified in the listing, as below:

Please submit well-produced Irish/Celtic Songs that could transport listeners to the Emerald Isle! Your submissions should have great melodies, engaging rhythms, solid musicianship, and captivating, well-performed vocals. Your production should be top-notch, as well. You’d be wise to avoid names, dates, times, or places in your lyrics. Broadcast Quality is needed.

I'd say the vocal isn't good enough... it's pitchy, not recorded well enough (hollow), and gives an impression that the singer is bored and not really interested in what he's singing.

Also, the lyric only works when you hear it in its entirety... and it is VERY rare for a song to play a four full minutes in a movie.

Some of the lyrics are pretty funny, so you should work on them and polish it up (the chorus needs work, I think). But I don't think it would cut it for this listing, for the simple reason that the singer doesn't sound Irish. If they want a song like this, they want it to sound REALLY Irish. When you get the lyrics, really perfected, get an Irish guy to sing it for you, and maybe have someone play some fiddle licks as well.

Just my two or three cents,

Vince
