First time
This is my first time on the forum.
After almost fifty years away from the music business I have to admit that it is a challenge to find my way through the jungle that it has become.
Back in the sixties I was involved in the Liverpool scene (yes, I did know THEM back then, and many other big names too). In those innocent times doors were open and the business was receptive to new talent and material. I used to take demos with me to London and they would get a listen there and then from The People Who Mattered. I would get a Yes, No or Maybe in a matter of minutes, from top A&R people, producers, and publishers, who all had the authority and the guts to make their own decisions. No doors were ever closed.
The reality of today’s business, as I have discovered to my frustration, is that The People Who Matter are now hard to find and seem to want minimal contact with any unknown quantity who has something on offer. No unsolicited material seems to be the norm nowadays. And that makes it hard for a new kid in town to present whatever he has on offer.
And that is why I decided to try Taxi. I’ve had a couple of forwards that have so far apparently stopped there, but at least I now have a channel that gives me the possibility to bring my songs a step closer to the people who make the decisions.
This is also why I will be spending 15 long hours each way on a plane from Scandinavia where I now live, to be at the Rally, because I obviously need a crash course in what’s happening, why and how in today’s recording and publishing reality.
I’ll be the guy with grey in his beard, a paunch, and a giant jetlag.
Hope to get to know many of you at the Rally.

Re: First time
geir, welcome! sounds like i'm ALMOST your vintage. yes it's a totally new world on the business end, but good sounding music never goes out of style. for me it's been about finding the genres i have a shot at based on my history and experience, and then challenging myself to expand from there. if you already have some forwards, that's a great sign!

Re: First time
What a great story! I thought my being away from music for 20 years was a pretty good one until I read yours
You'll want to connect with the characters here on the forum and you'll want forum members to know that you're a forum member and here's how we do it...

Most of us on the forum try to wear a little colored "dot" on our name badges. These are just price stickers that you can pick up in just about anywhere and people will have extras at the Rally if you need one. The idea of the dot is that it signifies that you're a forum member and is easy to see across the room. See a dot? It's a forum member! Aside from that, you'll see a lot of us in what is called "The Dot Lounge", the seating area and bar just off the main lobby.
Cool that you're making the trip and looking forward to meeting you

Re: First time
Thanks Briand, Crawdaddy, Dave and Andy for your welcome.
I'll already be at the hotel early afternoon on the Wednesday (without the coloured dot) and staying through to Mondag (with the dot very visible).
So I'm looking forward to getting to know you then, and I'm sure you can give me a lot of enlightenment on how to do what and when, which is information that is sadly lacking at the moment for my part.
See you in a few weeks!
Geir

Re: First time
Hi Geir,
Wish I could travel with you, but no budget for that here, sadly.
Still welcome to the forums, and hope to hear some of your music soon.
