Foley VS timed "sound FX"

Post by HowlingUlf » Mon Mar 25, 2019 6:35 am

I learned the hard way when I tried to add prairie wind noise to an intro to a song for a listing once. "Don't do dat!". OK!
But what about timed effects such as clocks and mechanical watches, pile drivers, tempo mapped choo-choo trains and ... etc?
It's more part of the song if it's on the beats, right, but at the same time it can be distracting if it's too much and too loud IYKWIMAITYD?
At the same time even at the right volume it sounds you hear and it CAN kind of get a little novelty and goofy?

thoughts?

Hey HowlingUlf,

I would not add any of that stuff, unless it is an integral part of the track.
If a TV show or movie wants it..... THEY will add it.

But if it is already there.... they can't take it out.

Of course there is 1 library I write for that will always ask for a sub mix without any sound effects...... that usually means swooshes and or risers taken out too.

My 5 cents worth,
Tim

If you're writing for film/tv licensing opps avoid all of that all the time.

Yeah, took a coffee break and it just struck me.
There is a difference.
It's, in this case, a "song song" more than a background track
So maybe you'd get away with more if it's a song BUT ...
Just because the Guillotine is old and rusty doesn't mean I have to stick my head into it!
