FTP

Post by mazz » Mon Jun 29, 2009 4:52 am

Hey everyone! With the wide availability of high speed internet, we will be starting to see many more clients requesting delivery via FTP.Since it's not something most of us have had to deal with on a day to day basis, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread so that folks can share their knowledge and experience with this mode of delivering files.I actually don't know too much about the mechanics of FTP except that the term stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and that on the Mac I use the software Fetch to do my FTP uploads. It works perfectly for me as long as I have the right FTP server address and password.I've heard that some browsers work for FTP but I've not had success using them. Dedicated software seems to be a better solution, for me, at least.I've also heard that Mac OS has a built in FTP server but I haven't taken the time to set one up yet.Services like YouSendIt and SendSpace are FTP services with the FTP aspect hidden behind a friendlier interface but some clients have their own servers and require composers to upload to them. It's this aspect that seems to be causing some trouble for people a bit unfamiliar with the process.I'd be willing to bet there's some folks here that can give more details and recommendations for software for both platforms.Cheers!!Mazz

Good topic Mazz.I use Fetch too, (which used to be free). It's pretty straight forward. I don't know much else about FTP so I'll be monitoring this thread as well.

Mozilla has FTP capabilities. I've used it to upload to a couple of libraries.Chuck

I use YouSendIt when I can, which is most of the time. I did recently have to use Fetch (I have a mac) to send some pieces to a music library. The library sent me the host name and password, and I then "Put" the files by dragging the .aif files of my bounced tunes on to the screen. It was interesting to see all the files of other composers on the page that appeared (including Mazz and Hummingbird!). My first attempt failed as I accidently zipped the files, which caused them to be downloaded with an extra extension on the file name. This happened when I chose the "Automatic" option for the file type. The library informed me of the problem and I re sent the files in Raw Data form. I think the choice was "Binary".I used a free demo of Fetch, which was good for something like fifteen days. After that it's twenty five dollars a year. I'm going to look into the possibility that Mac comes with one for free. Thanks for the heads up, Mazz.Mewman

FWIW, XP and Internet Explorer has native FTP support as well.In your address bar: ftp://wherever you want to go.com Then it will prompt you for your username and passwordFill out the dialog box. Then from the menu - Choose page ->Open FTP site in Windows Explorer. The nice thing about doing this is that a window will be created much like a local resource window where you can do all the standard file manipulations - cut, paste, rename, delete, etc.HTHs~wings~

Windows platforms have an ftp client built into the cmd shell , just type ftp and follow the useage docs --> not for the technically challenged! It's pretty cryptic, and probably not for you if you're not used to using the cmd shell, but it's FREE . Erich

I've used lots of ftp clients on both Mac and PC -- but now use the Firefox add on FireFTP most of the time. It's free, easy and works on both mac and pc.https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /684Though honestly, I think that FTP will decline with services like yousendit and sendspace. It's easier to send someone a link than server and login info.Aub

Some of these libraries use the FTP to put the work back on the composer to get our files where they can see them. If we did yousendit, then the client would need to download and store the file (more work and wait time for them). With FTP, the library can open the folder that we had to create and populate, and the artist is on the hook to manage the transfer. The client later opens the folder with the artist name on it, listen through, and re-title the folder as "done". Pretty easy for them (more power to them too...and at least I know the files got through this way).

I've used both FTP with user name and passwords as well as Yousendit. I have clients overseas in the UK that send me files and receive files via FTP and we both love the ease of use as well as privacy.
