Gatton, Paisley, Mason, Lee?

Ever since we created a Pandora station called "Albert Lee Radio" we've been having a running discussion as to which of these four guitarslingers is/was the most versatile, which of them can/could pull off the most compelling solo. I love 'em all and can't decide. You guys know stuff; care to weigh in?

Why compare oranges and apples? They are all exeptional slingers..
It's purely a taste question you ask..

I like Paisley's solo's quite a bit, but they are often short rapid fire ones..
To my ears Brent Mason are the most versatile, but both Lee and Gatton are awesome sidemen!

Wow, thanks for the info; I did not know that Mason does overdubs from home, that's awesome! I love Paisley's way of starting a solo sounding like Albert Lee and ending it sounding like, I dunno, Frank Zappa lol. I realize that, when he felt like it, Gatton could sound like TEN Brad Paisleys, TEN Albert Lees. We currently have all four of these guys in heavy rotation. to me, maybe not apples and oranges but Winesap apples and Golden Delicious apples they're all wonderful and can all pilot a serious journey

Noted Telecaster wranglers, all. Muddy Waters (also a great and underrated Telecaster player) said it best; beyond a certain point, you cain't be the best, you can jes' be a good 'un. All of those you mentioned are good 'uns. Since there's no such thing as too much fun, you should also check out Redd Volkaert, Jim Campilongo, Arlen Roth, Pete Anderson, Will Ray, John Jorgenson, Jerry Donahue, Don Rich, Bill Kirchen, Kenny Vaughan, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Jimmy Bryant, Roy Buchanan and James Burton. Of the bunch, Brad Paisley might be my favorite, but not on account of his phenomenal guitar playing; when I hear folks run down modern country music and moan about how it's all just warmed-over southern rock, I can always "Yeah, but..." 'em with Brad. He's far and away the best songwriter on that list, and Bradley jes' might have the best tone of the bunch, too.

Hey thanks for that list, Mojobone. We love Vince Gill and Roy B. and James B. I'd completely forgotten about Wariner . . . gonna load your whole list into Pandora. And yeah, Paisley is by far my favorite songwriter on that list and imo, along with Taylor Swift & Miranda Lambert, the best songwriters charting country today . . . thanks again
