Getting your "placed "song on a Spotify playlist for free

Post by JohnnyP » Sun Jun 19, 2022 8:57 am

I think I've posted this idea before but wanted to update.

If you have a song that gets placed in a tv show, movie (and I think this will work for games too) go to tunefind.com and open a free account. Find the show/movie/game from tunefind's list, locate the episode and add your song. Tunefind will ask for a scene description so just put in a small blurb about what's going on at the time your song is used. Once you do that your song has a strong chance of being added to playlists for the show/movie/game.

Here's my most recent Spotify playlist add from a placement on The CW's show "legacies". My song "Been Waiting" is song #171 (chronological order). My streaming is up 151% since that add, and frankly where else would I be able to get on a playlist with Billie Eilish, The Fixx, Amy Winehouse and Little Big Town !

In these days of poor streaming royalties we need to take advantage of every dollar that's out there

How many plays did you get and do the libraries mind if they are exclusive ?

Hi Mark,

This was a non exclusive placement through a “critical” library so no worries about using. This current song was just added Friday so streams are low, only a few hundred. A song I had on the Netflix show “Outer Banks” has generated between $300-$500 per year since 2020.

Wow - I have some cues that were in KUWTK ..also Non-Ex...one of them has 900 plays on my Soundcloud Account ( which I don't promote )

So assuming one gets onto a playlist and generates a worthwhile number of streams...what's the mechanism to get paid ?

So you have to have the song distributed through tunecore, distrokid or whatever service you prefer.
I do that as soon as I find out about a placement. When the song is active on Spotify, iTunes etc that’s when I add it to Tunefind. It takes a few months sometimes to get on playlists

Congrats John, great idea, but Tunefind's list of shows seems pretty limited, and they didn't have the young and the restless and many others outside the US. Shame.

I noticed that too, Y&R is not on Tunefind. Still a great tip Johnny and I'll keep an eye out for other placements. :D
