Ghost song, Ghost song
Haunting Kansas City alleyways at random
Is it Autumn winds or a trumpet playing phantom
I came up from New Orleans in August
To play bottleneck guitar
My first set was for a stray dog that sniffed
My strawberry jam tip jar
I had spent alotta time believin’
All the greats had slipped away
Then a superstitious wino told me
One came back to play
Ghost song, Ghost song
With a melody the lonesome moon remembers
And it’s floating down midnight streets in late September
They say he was playin’ near an alley
In some ragged threadbare clothes
Then an early cold front rolled in
And his trumpet nearly froze
Then the sleet began to bite him
Like a thousand icy thorns
They found him slumped against a lamppost
Clinging to his horn
Ghost song, Ghost song
Blowin’ softly down the alleyways and sidewalks
Serenading barflies and working girls and nighthawks
Just last night I heard a horn
And I felt his spirit fly
It was lonely and forlorn
And I could hear it cry
So I grabbed my old guitar
And played with the ghost of Fall
Out there far beyond the stars
He missed music most of all
Ghost song, Ghost song
Haunting Kansas City alleyways at random
Is it Autumn winds or a trumpet playing phantom
