Harmonic resonance? To get rid of it, you could null it out theoretically by generating an identical sine tone and flip the phase button, (180 degrees ).

So what were you hoping to achieve by generating a sine wave at 40hz?

yes that is curious. Audacity is normally a 2 channel audio editor, and it's hard for me to conceive if you were constructing a bass only track or a mixed track with other instruments.

Usually the high notes in my sub bass are due to tinnitus!!!!!

40hz sine isn't far from Lfo frequency, lol! D#1 +49 semitones? Using one note is also a little odd :P Synthesis I would think might use that as a carrier frequency but with noise or other components, 60hz for example is electrical hum. I think I must be
missing something.

A synthesizer. there are many free ones. You could say the presets are blackboxes, but not really as you are able to edit, You might start with a subtractive synth to learn about oscillators, filters, effects, Lfo for modulations...
https://www.robpapen.com/subboombass-2.html Once you get familiar, you will notice that a synth is laid out in sections, so going from a synth to another synth, you won't be totally lost each time.

Sine wave = one pure tone. Zero added harmonics unless you add distortion in your mix or you turn up your speakers to the point of distortion.

I would be looking for things in your mix room that are resonant at the frequency of the sine (or multiples of it) you have created and are ringing. If you only hear it only monitor speakers. If it’s on phones only I have no idea.

The question could be also:

Why do you need to create the sub bass ?

A different kick sample would make it redundant. Same with bass.

Audacity is an audio editor, and like wavelab the generated tones or signals are for test purposes

Note
The Signal Generator is not intended for synthesizing musical sounds.
