Thanks, Peter. We are working on refining it.funsongs wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2019 1:09 pmFWIW: one of my first LPs was by The Challengers.
Agreeing with others about 'more reverb' on the solo/main guitar... while I personally would like the drums up, too;
I'd suggest doing an A/B comparison of your track to several other hit-maker surf bands of that mid-60s era.
The over-the-top reverb of that style, IMHO, will help it stand out as clearly more surf-guitar than Country Tele... and there are some similarities.
Great tune/work, Guys.

Re: Hit or Miss?
I like the track and playing
I heard too much bass compared to some youtube playlists of 60's surf rock.
Try a 12dB/octave cut at 75Hz and a notch at around 350 with a Q narrowing the deeper you cut to taste and A/B against some references.
Maybe shave off some highs to imitate the effect that tape had on the high end back in the day.
My 2 cent salt shaker

It's definitely spot on stylistically. It never hurts to tweak a mix to it's fullest, but I wasn't hearing anything way off in Mix #2.

Thanks, Les. I'm uploading a revised version. I'll definitely consider your suggestions with the latest mix.lesmac wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2019 9:44 pmI like the track and playing

Re: Hit or Miss?
Honest no BS opinion from me is that there is too much going on, I'd drop some instruments at times, take that 350Hz out of the drums and put some definition in the bass while reducing the boom.
Boomy (40 Hz – 90 Hz)
Fat (75 Hz – 150 Hz)
Thin (40 Hz – 180 Hz)
Power (40 Hz – 150 Hz)
Impact (40 Hz – 150 Hz)
Clarity (190 Hz – 800 Hz)
Presence (800 Hz – 6.5 kHz)
Attack (120 Hz – 4.1 kHz)
The drums are doing a lot so you don't need too much instrumentation. You have to sacrifice something- some organ/guitar or drums. I'd add a touch more reverb to the guitar. The guitar sounds compressed more than back in the day but that mightn't be a deal breaker.
I could be totally wrong

Re: Hit or Miss?
On the other hand, you could be totally right!! I see merit in both approaches. The early Surf records were fairly simple productions. So I like Mix 2 from that viewpoint. Mix 3 perhaps has too many moving parts. I like some aspects of it. There are other aspects of which I am less enthusiastic. I'll keep tinkering with it. Who knows? I may end up submitting both.lesmac wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 5:51 pmHonest no BS opinion from me is that there is too much going on, I'd drop some instruments at times, take that 350Hz out of the drums and put some definition in the bass while reducing the boom.
