How do you guys do it?

Post by edmondredd » Thu Oct 19, 2017 5:33 am

So preparation(s) to the Road rally has begun. Being more of a visual person, I had to put all the classes, the panels and their timings in a single spreadsheet (well 3 actually, one for each day) in order to plan my first, ever, rally.
You can find the sheet here and feel free to use it as well. You'd probably want to save a copy for yourself (oh and it's best viewed at 75% of the actual size).

But the questions are:
How on earth could you attend a maximum of all of these?
What if there are 2 interesting things (to you) or more happening at the same time? how do you manage? Check Friday afternoon, between the How you do it, and the classes AND the movie night all overlapping :/
Is it ok to finish a class for example and join the panel in the middle of the discussion?

Hit me up with your best organizational tips

thanks,
edmond redd

For past Rallies I would only go to classes when the Main Room/Ballroom had a session I wasn't interested in...
Taking a look at this Rally's schedule, I think I'll be in the Ballroom the entire time! :P :D

Hey Edmond,

The first Rally can be tough... I was so overwhelmed with where to go and what to see that I missed out on all of the socializing and meeting forum members, etc. that are almost as important as the classes :)

I would try to prioritize as best you can, and keep in mind that classes in the smaller breakout rooms usually all fill up, so if there is one that you really want to go to and get the most from you should try to get there early. Presentations in the ballroom and the larger auditorium upstairs are easier to come in late or leave early without disturbing the presentation. If you expect to return for the 2018 Rally then you can figure out which breakout classes tend to be repeated every year and use that to help prioritize.

If you still have questions after the rally starts you can ask Cass... he'll be in the ballroom ;o)

Hope this helps!

-Bill

Hey Edmond,

I'm prepping for my first RR too... so many choices!
Thank you for your generous offer of sharing your spreadsheet it with us all, I'd like a copy please.

Thanks also Robert & Bill for your insight.

Will be great to meet you all.

it is indeed tough but thank you Cass and Bill for helping out.
Still trying to figure out how to organize all of that, prioritizing, and going through the list of mentors.

I haven't been able to attend a Rally for awhile, but in the past, sometimes we'd trade notes. If I wanted to go to 2 classes that were on at the same time, a friend would go to one, and me the other, and we'd share what we learned.

It's fairly easy to leave a class early and skip to the ballroom. But it's harder to come to a class late. They are usually standing room only if you get there late.

What Vikki said Edmond. The classes that you missed, just ask a buddy to summarize over a beer. You're going to get so much info already man, don't stress about the classes missed.

Less Stress Absolutely!!!
Try to think of the Rally as a "Stately Party"
