Brauner Vm1, U47, AKG C12, Shure SM7, maybe try an AEA 440 for a smooth ribbon sound. If he's playing acoustic for basic tracks the Shure SM7 is great for separation with the acoustic guitar. I have liked the Brauner on male voices with a little rasp in their voice. A U47 with a Neve 1073 and a 1176 is hard to beat on most voices.
Depends on the song and mood of the overall recording too. I've heard a SM57 sound great on some voices and the singer is very comfortable with them.
Also the rest of the chain can make an impact. It's important to have it in place to capture the moment and stay out of the way of the performer, make them comfortable and
help them to concentrate on the performance. Don't slow down the momentum of the moment by being too technical.
My 2 cents, not worth more than anyone else's 2 cents.

Tnx, Keith. The Brauner sounds really exciting! Way out of my league, though, as a home fiddler. Would you happen know of any budget mics that could work on slightly raspy male voices?

In the medium range how about an AKG 414 or an AT 4050. I think the 4050 sounds a lot like the 414. When I bought my first mic for studio it was a 414. It's a workhorse mic.
Thanks,
Keith

Appreciate it, Keith. I'll check them out. Just hustling though with the barebones here.6string wrote:In the medium range how about an AKG 414 or an AT 4050. I think the 4050 sounds a lot like the 414. When I bought my first mic for studio it was a 414. It's a workhorse mic.
