Wish I could help you Bruce, because I might be in need of new cans soon as well.

I've been using AKG K 240 DFs for the last 15 years because I have to do most of my pre-mixing with headphones and they are very flat and good for that purpose
(understanding that one should avoid mixing with headphones right?).

Yeah, and I also have a par of Sony MDR-7506s as well.
They have been resigned to listening on the Internet and occasionally listening to a mix after the fact.

The guys seem to have come up with some pretty good choices.
And I sure would be interested in what you decide to get to replace your AKG 240s. ;)
Good luck. :)

How do the M50s compare with Sennheiser HD 280s? I also use AKG K240s, which aren't as good as the Sennheisers.

I like the 280s, decent isolation for tracking, and I never really mix in the cans. One thing I don't like, but it's probably me....the 280s originally hurt the top of my head. Maybe I have a ridge up there like a raptor or something. Oh, another thing, the 280s, while I think they are good, have a tendency for the plastic parts to fly off, that has happened to me too, because of careless people in the studio, but it didn't hurt the usability or really change them in any way.

Just curious if anyone has compared those phones.

Another vote her for the Audio-Technica AT-M50's. I have those plus the Sony 7506s. The M50's give a pretty accurate representation of a mix imo. The 7506s are hyped somewhat in the low end and the top end and are also scooped in the low mids. I have some top end hearing loss and the 7506s help me check mixes but they don't really give an accurate check like the M50s do.

I also find that the m50s are very close to what I hear from my Event 20/20 bas speakers.

The wife asked the other day what I wanted for father's day.......Told her I was shopping new headphones......Don't think she heard me.....I really need to try the AT 50s out......they seem to be the clear favorite here. Gonna to call Ash and GC to see if they are stocked. Thanks for all the input.

AKG still makes great cans... and they have a few new models, give them a try.

I have a pair of AKG 240 headphone I have used since the mid to late 80s. I use them on a crown D70 power amp for monitoring, including a live drum kit.... They are starting to get pretty rough, They owe me nothing.... any suggestions on what I should replace them with...

Thanks,
This might have been said already, but Dr. Dre has some awesome headphones that are worth considering...
I think they're called "Beats By Dre"?
A few engineers I know swear by them!
Google 'em, they'll come up.

Peace.

I mostly try to stay away from technical threads anymore but if you liked your AKG K240s you'll undoubtedly like the AKG K701 or whichever is the latest number designation now. Pretty awesome!

Good Luck!
