Re: If you have 1 minute...
Bob,Nice piece--I listened to the updated version. As stated, the piano intro sets a great atmosphere. It'll be interesting to hear this with EWQLSO.The "louder when bounced" is an interesting phenom. When you bounce in LOGIC, are you going right to MP3, or is there an intermediate step where you render to AIFF or WAV first? Is your master buss in LOGIC metered so you can see exactly what's happening to the audio real time (pre-bounce)?VinceVince

It sounds like something from that old show "Unsolved Mysteries" to me. It's definitely suspensful, and yes Hitckcockian too! Andy

I must be doing something to create this difference between listening in Logic and then listening to a bounced version?Any suggestions?BobHey Bob,In iTunes, click on "View" in the menu bar and then click on "Show Equalizer" and see what settings are selected. It's possible that your EQ settings in iTunes are what's causing the discrepancy. I'd have to agree with what others have already said... Makes me think of a suspense/horror type scene, but not CSI or House. And the revisions you made were good. The reverb really helped. - Big Blue

Re: If you have 1 minute...
Bob,Sounds good, the reverb helped a lot. Instead of dropping the strings out, connect the notes but do a very short, small fade before the end of a note and a similar fade in for the next note. This may give the impression of a bow change which is a more natural sound then the strings just stopping. Also, check out CSI and other shows of that ilk. The scores are mostly electronic with some strings layered over the top sometimes. Just for fun you might want to try a version with an ambient synth pad instead of the piano. Don't get me wrong, I love the piano and the sound is great, but just to try a different direction, add an electronic element by replacing the piano.Just some thoughts. Very cool piece!!Mazz

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Re: If you have 1 minute...
Hi ,Thanks for all of suggestions, they are helping me raise the bar on this little tune. Mazz, thanks for the suggestion on the strings, I can't wait to try it.I attended a Master Class given by Terrence Blanchard on Saturday on composition, and I put those techniques to use on this tune and it really works. Basically, take your melody, then write it up a step at a time thru the key, then up a minor 3, then a 4th etc, then invert the line, then pattern all the different rhythm patterns. I applied it with this tune and it really helped, he said this is also a great technicque for writing harmonies. The Master Class was great,,, and you know this forum is a Master Class unto itself. Thanks for your help!Bob

"I don't have cable so I can't watch shows like CSI/House. I really need to rent the season on DVD so I can educate myself."I threw cable away 7 months ago. Go to Hulu.com where you can watch all these shows for free over the internet.B

Another thing that I do for these kinds of things is basically take you melody and make a matrix out of it the same way you would make a 12 tone row, but instead of doing a strict 12 tone row, just make the matrix contain your melody notes and then complete the matrix from there. You will end up with a box full of fun unorthodox melodies and harmonies and will basically accomplish almost the same thing that you learned in the master class.

Hey Bob!Yeah, I like it! Sounds really creepy. Like someone snoopin' around in a house looking for somethin, possibly a murder weapon or some type of evidence. Actually it sounds like somethin' from an old TV show, like Columbo or McCloud or somethin like that. Which is cool, there ain't nuthin' wrong with that!ibanez468

Re: If you have 1 minute...
bmeteI was listening and thinking this is where some guy in the back of the movie theater would yell "Girl, don't go in there!"! I really like it and I believe your software will take you there. Now, the piano... You stated a theme with the opening notes, repeated 4x and then plinked out this cool chord in an upper register as your other parts enter. You never repeated that upper register thing. The piano repeating the opening theme over and over began to be something I didn't like after a while. Almost obnoxious. I don't have a lot of experience with the genre so take this with a grain of salt. I see where you are going with the repetition. It adds a tension, but I sure liked the plink! To be fair, if this were the sound track to some video I was watching I'm not sure I would even be aware of the repetition. More the mood I think. And on that concept you've certainly got it goin on. Just something to think about.Good Luck!Keith

All of the above seems helpful and on-track; I can only add that I think you should develop some longer versions, possibly transitioning to different moods or with a sting, or different stings. thick brass cluster, maybe. Actually feels a bit more Twilight Zone than Hitchcock, to me.
