Here's our track: https://soundcloud.com/true-swans/said-i-was-crazy-1

Curious to know how we could improve this.

Hello!
I'm not an expert, so don't take me too seriously.
Having said that, I think the song is in line with the reference.
After minute 1.13 you have a very large verse before the following chorus. If I were you I'd insert another chorus in the middle to add more dynamic to the song or just get rid of half part and go directly to the next chorus.
About the mix, you are not too far from the example song, but I'd cut some mid frequencies on the Snare and add some mid to mid-high frequencies on the vocals. Try to equal your mix to the reference and the relative volume among instruments and vocals.
I don't know if you ever tried this before, but a good idea is to use Izotope Ozone to capture the overall mix eq curves and then apply it to your final master. Some time ago there was Steinberg Freefilter software which was awesome to do that but is discontinued.

Thank you for sharing!
Regards

It's cool but I would work on it a bit more.

Reign in the snare. It's pushed wide and sounds a little too robotic. Keep it more towards the centre and push the ambience out to the side if need be. Vary some snare velocities.

The groove between kick snare and bass needs tightening up so that it does groove. Maybe not so many bass notes and tighter to the kick.

There is too much low end info below 30 Hz. The kick and bass both mask one another and lack clarity. 40 to 150Hz.

Clear out some of the midrange instruments from 100 to 150 or so down. Some of the guitars seem to fight one another a bit.

Just my two cents, take with proverbial salt.
