Indie folk instrumental

Post by lesmac » Mon Jul 25, 2016 10:53 pm

Hi folks. I missed a deadline a while back for this one due to life getting in the way.

So no listing for it at the moment.

Just after any comments on mix or any thoughts in general.

Les, I'll check it out in the monitors later today.
Through the desktop speakers my first impression was that it should start at 0:44 because the slide is the real hero/meat n bones to me and engaged me there.
I've been getting hit a lot for being too busy without a clear motiff. Your opening 0 - 0:44 sounds like something i would've done, i like it, but i'm getting rejections for stuff like that...
Don't shoot me... I'm not really awake just yet, will get back to ya

Great tune.

It is bouncy.

A quick observation : A Waltz is in triple time.

Also as a suggestion maybe grab a nylon stringed instrument for a new colour in the soundscape.

:D

...okay I'm back... :P
Such a fun one Les!
I still hold to the 0:44 start
but don't loose the intro! Use it as a bridge!!! :D (just my thought)
Mix wise... the drums/snare sound like they are distant/across the street/muffled
I would like to hear the Mando on the Left side so it can compliment the electric panned right
when it comes in the Right side becomes dominant...
Don't forget to edit out the couple seconds of silence at the beginning...
When the slide comes in and you move the first electric to the left, add a little volume to it!
I would also move the organ out from under the slide a little to the left
It fights the slide for just a couple of notes because they are in the same range...

Okay, now you can shoot me!!!! :P

Les,

I pretty much agree with what Cass said.

I think the drums could be more present than they are.

I might also treat the mandolin a little differently - maybe slap some reverb on their?

If you do edit the beginning, like Cass suggested, might I suggest a 4-6 seconds bit of just slide guitar? The slide guitar is the song IMO!

Will do a mix along those lines Cass. Will strip it down and re-arrange things a bit. I hear where ya coming from. All easy to do, just a bit of re-arranging.

Thanks John. I originally had an up front drum sound but thought it was too in your face, tinkered with it then slapped a reverb plugin on the master buss for a whole band space! :oops: :lol: First time I've done that.

My first effort with a mandolin. My partner's Ibanez she lent to her brother 30 years ago. {We're minding it back_ he's got a gibson}
It sounded quite harsh to me too, maybe a touch of chorus on it too.

Thanks David, I was a bit suss on that that,I don't know what kind of dance step it would be.. a two step?

You right about something nylon, have to get me one of those. The credit card is in lock down at the moment and I'm wishing I'd have bought more instruments instead of some of the plugins I don't use :lol:

Thanks again all much appreciated.

Sorry I took so long with this one, a few other things got in the way.

I shortened it but couldn't do a couple of things;

The slide had too much junk underneath it to stand on it's own as an intro. Sorry John! I must be really lazy for not grabbing the guitar and laying down a new part.

I couldn't put the original intro into the song later as a bridge as Cass suggested. My editing skills weren't up to it.

The mandolin has more bite than bark {which good bluegrass mandolins have or so I am told_ bark that is}
I'll have to be a bit more careful with mic selection and placement in future.

All the tips were great. I think it sounds better. Link is in the first post.

Thanks again Guys.
