INSPIRING PIANO-Based INSTRUMENTAL CUES.

Post by Peterg » Thu Sep 24, 2020 6:28 am

Hello,
As a keyboard/piano player, this sort of brief should be up my street, but as a Newbie I'm still learning about how to create a professional finished product.
I would really appreciate some feedback on this one.

https://www.taxi.com/members/KuKo-0SmTc ... -beginning

Does it sound like a cue, or is it too busy?
Is the piano sound OK (reverb, compression etc)

POSITIVE, INSPIRING PIANO-Based INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a hard-working Music Library that’s always landing placements in TV Shows, Film projects, and Movie Trailers!

They’re looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues that could fit in the general stylistic wheelhouse of these references we got from our client:

Please submit original Piano-based Instrumental Cues that have a positive, inspiring vibe and feel. Your arrangements can be simpler, Piano-only Cues, or you can add more instrumentation to create fuller productions – just be sure that Piano is the focal point. If you're using virtual instruments, be sure that they don't sound dated, overly quantized, or MIDI-driven. They want Cues that can be emotionally uplifting to viewers – give them that, and you could be on the right track!

TAXI Tip: Avoid getting too fancy or overly complicated with your Cues! They're not looking for the next Mozart or Rachmaninoff – they're looking for music that will underscore the mood of whatever scene they're in without distracting from what's happening on-screen. Less is usually more!

Submissions should be about 45 to 90 seconds long, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned endings will work best. Please do NOT copy the referenced examples in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, texture, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast quality is needed.

This Library offers a NON-EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 Deal. You’ll get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s Share. You’ll keep 100% of the original copyright and master recording. You must own or control the Master and Copyright to submit to this pitch. Please submit as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like, online or per CD. Time permitting, someone from the Publishing Company may screen some or all of the submissions. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Thursday, October 8th, 2020. TAXI # S201008PN

Neither my niche nor genre - but just these ears' opinion...
the last part, beginning around 1:22 sounded like it could/should be the beginning, first segment;
followed by the first 27-seconds of it; then building to the end with the rest that currently sits in the middle.
Hope that makes sense. Nice composition - hopefully not too busy to be used as underscore and/or underneath dialogue.
FWIW: pleasant to the ears!

Thanks Peter, I think that's a great idea, I'll give it a try. Hopefully it's just a cut and paste job and a new ending.
All the best

Lovely tone and beautiful sentiment. The music sounds hopeful and the title suits the track. The strings or synth comes in at an appropriate time and lifts the piece. The ostinato sounds great and helps move the track forward. About 35 secs in the strings seem to lose their legato & start to sound a little midi thru to 47 - smooth out the changes. About 42-47 they draw too much attention, in my opinion, I would push them back in the mix a little at that point - if they are ensemble strings or a synth you don't want to have them too far forward. For the ending, I think you could drop the strings and be pure piano again from 1:22 on. (I see there is a comment about putting this bit at the beginning, if you do so, start without the strings).

It's a good composition, really nice work. A few tweaks and I think you'll be there.

HTH. As always, keep or sweep ;)

The "character" of your music seems to be exactly what they are looking for. It's hopeful, reflective and most beautiful. I listened several times and I could not bring myself to stop until it completely finished each time. (That almost never happens.) Thank you for the experience.
Best!

THanks for your feedback and comments, I agree the strings stick out a bit in places. There are a few different string parts going on, ensemble and a couple of cello parts, but I need to look at the playing and make them sound more realistic. I'm fairly new to using string samples and to me they always sound good, but I know I need to go in and adjust modulation and velocities to make them sound real. And removing them at the end sounds like a good idea too. But I'm so pleased you like it.

THanks

Peter

Wow i love this. It definitely hits the mood. I agree the legato string parts could be more legato. It verges on too busy but I think it's worth a submission to find out. Really nice job.
That piano verb tail in the beginning is great. Sounds like there are strings but only when you hit the higher velocities. I'm totally gonna do that....

Cheers,
Kit

Absolutely great piece, and you find me in agreement with the previous comments. On top of those, I would like to add that your piece is a bit too long, I have had a few returns because of that. Usually around 5 seconds longer than the specified duration is ok, but your piece is 15 seconds longer, so something to consider

Hi Peter,

I'm a piano/keys player too, so this caught my attention! Beautiful piece. I love the changes and how it builds. I'd actually be interested in hearing a piano solo version of it without the strings. I've submitted dual versions like that sometimes. Your playing is wonderful, and the piece definitely captures the feel of what they're looking for. I wrote and submitted 5 cues for this listing, so here's wishing us both good luck :)
