I returned or forwarded this song because
The second iteration of the opening piano figure is the bigger issue here as it feels a bit awkward and out of time, making for a distracting moment, rather than the even emotional tone they're seeking.
I have no idea what the screener is suggesting I change other than perhaps a more metronomic piano performance.
Hi Paulie:
I think the screener is talking about the piano for instance from :03 to :05. It's got kind of a tripping or stumbling feel to it, primarily because of two quick notes . I don't know that it needs to be metronomic, but there are two notes that are a bit quicker in the second figure than the first. I guess the screener would prefer just repeating the rhythm of the first figure?

Maybe that's the case, but given many forwards I've heard in the past something that subtle as reason for a return seems a little excessive to me. Every screener is unique, just like every cue. It will find a home like all of my other returns have.

Here's another version we'd love to get some feedback on. We did mostly remove the tremolo violin, as the screener suggested, though we slightly left it in the third act, way down in volume. The other big change is that we added pizzicato violin in act 2, and bowed violin in act 3. Both are live, played by Sharon. Also beefed up the cello and bass sounds a bit, in line with the new title: "
Torn & Tormented"

To answer your question, yes, there is certainly a place for two instrument cues. I think your music was beautiful, the tremolo was indeed distracting used as long as it was in the piece. I wonder what the screener would have said without the tremolo being there. Perhaps a good string pad in place would have provided the contrast you were looking for.
I got a return on that listing as well, not sure I understand the screener's feedback.

What I like most about this song
Great harmonic choices for this style/tone, and good sounding strings.
I think you could improve this song by
The main issue here is the inconsistent dotted rhythm figure. Adding more interest this way is a solid idea, but the idea here is much more just the overall tone rather than adding in extra musical ideas that don't forward the overall idea as much.

I hear no "inconsistent dotted figure"? Your piece is in 3/4, and the only thing is, as irthlingz pointed out, those 2 notes between :03 and :05. Apart from that, all good IMHO

I think the screener was thrown by your use of a grace note where it was a strict 8th note the first time. And you did the same thing in the 3rd section, so this becomes something that sticks out and might draw attention away from the scene. I think your 2nd section varied that motif well and in a way that would not be distracting.

Thanks for the feedback. I find this sort of attention to detail a bit odd given the likelihood that an actual music supervisor gives a crap about a grace note, or a slight rhythmic variation as heard here. I think sometimes screeners latch onto concepts that are not actually concerns of music editors... editors are looking for moods and feelings. If the performance were blatantly screwed up or bad I would understand... but to reject something based on slight rhythmic variations in a theme, and I mean slight, it seems odd to me.
