Instrumental Dance/house - need your ears and sage advice

Post by oshro » Sat Dec 12, 2015 12:19 am

Hi Folks. Trying my hand in the first dance/house track.
https://soundcloud.com/oshro/emdinstru1/s-zXWRv

I THINK I have something that might work for either of these two listings.
- do you think it fits?
- What's missing to make it fit?
- this is still not mixed and I'm hoping for some tips on where you'd start separating the sounds.

Listings:
------
1) ELECTRONIC DANCE INSTRUMENTALS with plenty of Mainstream Pop appeal are needed
. They’re searching for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals in the general stylistic wheelhouse of
acts like Diplo, Skrillex, Avici, etc., etc., etc.

examples: : “Be Right There” by Diplo & Sleepy Tom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIJ5XvZeb-k
“Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” by Skrillex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSeNSzJ2-Jw
“Waiting For Love” by Avicii https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHHLHGNpCSA

Please submit Instrumentals that sound very current and have plenty of mainstream radio appeal, with memorable melodic hooks, and a beat that you can’t help but pump your fist to! Imagine the type of music you’d hear at a Vegas nightclub as a celebrity DJ gets the crowd going.
That’s what they’re looking for!
You’d be wise to avoid anything that’s so busy or frenetic that it could become a distraction from dialog or voiceover.
Easy edit points and Non-Faded/Buttoned/Stinger endings will work best for this pitch.
All submissions should be more than 2 minutes in length.
Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).
----

2) ELECTRONIC “DEEP HOUSE” INSTRUMENTALS are needed for NON-Exclusive placements by the Music Supervisor of an Award Winning Netflix TV Series.
They’re looking for hip, Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumentals that could be found on the same playlist as
acts like Disclosure, Jamie XX, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, etc., etc., etc.
Please review the following references to get yourself into the sound and style of what they’re looking for:
- “Holding On” by Disclosure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVN6FqPpChQ
- “SeeSaw” by Jamie XX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-C-pOR6QP4
-“Garden” by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39BirET8OIg

Quoting the source: “Looking for Deep House Instrumentals to play as source at an art opening party. Should be in the vein of Disclosure and Jamie XX. Energetic, but in the House style - NOT current EDM.”
Give them trendy, metropolitan-sounding Instrumentals that you’d expect to hear when walking into a hoity-toity art gallery showing. Your submissions should have a similar aesthetic to the references above, with tight rhythmic beats coupled with innovative melodic elements.
Your submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length.
Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).
Tracks that are easy to edit will make the Supervisor and editors love your work. Because these will be used as background source music, buttoned/stinger endings are NOT requested for this listing. If your pieces already have them, don’t sweat it. We think they’ll be doing cross-dissolves between songs and scenes, and the songs’ endings will never get heard ;-)

Thanks!

This seems right on track for the first listing. I think the other listing is looking for something a little more underground and British sounding, maybe with a Funky Drummer sample or something with that "house" sound.

Nice work though, I think there is a good ebb and flow, and you have some shifts in voice to help keep interest.

i think it sounds pretty good for both listings..

my first impression @1:30 going into the drop it seemed a little weak..
but i will say i enjoy the little vox effects. and most of the sounds
overall it was cool..
oh and the first like "minute" i would just lose that .. you have enough going on

cheers

but thats just my opinion

secret sauce (ingredients) basic starting point
1 less is more
2 perceived louder than the section before
3 pumping in time with proper attack and release
4 modern sounds
5 listen to other hit songs
6 play in loud would you dance to it (refer to 5)
7 have fun

Aaah! much better with sound!

If I ask myself would this song be easy to spot on a playlist because it just is odd there the answer must be no!
Or if I were asked to pick one out of four songs on the two listings like that I'm not sure yours is the odd one.
Based on that : send it away!!!
And it sounded cool and balanced with nice ingredients based on anything/everything else as well so just cross your fingers or anything else that feels good but won't help!!! 8-)
