Is it blue enough?

Post by LamarPecorino » Mon Apr 08, 2019 7:14 am

Earlier this year, there was a listing for Blues songs about "Home". Conrad Wilson and I wrote "Get Back Home", but weren't able to finish the production in time for that particular listing. I'm wondering if this song is "blue" enough for a blues listing. We'd appreciate any thoughts that you have on the subject. Thanks for listening.

Great tune Gents!

To my ears: The opening feels more like a Willie Nelson tune since the Harp feels more 70's country (Either dirty the Harp up or replace with a BB King guitar)

Once the vocal starts you nail it! Now just bring the vocal up to be the lead instrument, it is hiding right now, I want to hear every nuance of the great vocal!

LOL, I just yawned and popped my ears, the vocal doesn't have to be brought up as much as I thought at first (pre-non-filtered ears :P )

Thanks for listening and writing, Cass! I'm glad the song didn't automatically cause you to yawn! ;) We'll revisit the instrumentation for the intro.

Hey Lamar... just got a listen to this.
Really like the writing, and the vocal style has me thinking this coulda been a B.B. King song.
Just an Old-Guy's ear-pinion... but I was Jonesin' for a few things:
1) more dynamics overall - meaning: more differentiation between verses- maybe pull out some things that are taking away from the voice/story.
2) get rid of the horns altogether.
3) bigger change-up to make the Bridge more different.
4) without trying to sound like a B.B. rip off or cover, some nice Blues guitar licks in there might be worth a try.

It's a song with great bones & potential, is what I'm trying to express - would like to hear it really stand up and SING.
Well done, Guys.
(EDIT: sorry - not Chorus)

Thanks for listening and writing, Peter. I may try a more stripped down version and see how that works. In its current incarnation, it probably feels/sounds more like Memphis Soul than Memphis Blues.

Thank you, Peter and cassmcentee!
I really never even thought about a BB King guitar approach. It makes perfect sense!
I'll take that to heart and hands and see what I can come up with.
It's very exciting to have different ears to give us the prompting to follow a different trail to follow!
Thank you, Gentlemen!

Yeah, it's definitely in BB King territory. The harp makes it sound more country though, so replace that with a lead guitar and you'd be good to go. If you need a guitarist to do that, asked Richard Dance - I think he'd do an awesome job for you.

Kinda funny, actually - cause I hadn't read Cass's comments.
Maybe there's an echo in here?! :? 8-)
Lucille's cryin' right about now (hint-hint: the song lyrics I just sent to Lamar - :) )

My thoughts are: Contrast between sections is something I would address... Harmonica in the intro is great but I would not use it in the first verse and rather bring it back in later. After the first chorus I would drop some of the instruments and build it up again. I also think the vocals could sit in a nicer "room/ambiance/reverb" - hard to say what works best I would just try different things. I also think that a break here and then would work nicely in that style (e.g. 01:00).
Just my five cents.
Cheers,
Matt
