ISRC Codes?

Post by fpalmieri » Thu Jan 22, 2009 3:17 pm

Hi,Thanks to TAXI I've made a number of deals with music licensing companies over the past few years. I recently signed some songs to a new company (not through TAXI). They just wrote me and told me they have some kind of deal now with YouTube for online distribution and they need ISRC codes for my songs. They asked if I want to provide them or if they want them to take care of it.I actually didn't know what ISRC was until this came up. I looked it up and kind of understand, but I'm wondering how I should proceed. I'd rather have them do it for convenience, but I'm not sure if that would be risky since this is a new company I haven't worked with yet. Also, I'm not sure how I would do it myself anyway.Has anyone had any experience with assigning ISRC codes to their tracks - any advice to share? Thanks!Frank

If anyone has had their music released to any online music retailers via for example CD Baby then the code is provided to you for each recording by the distributor. Below is from the IFPI website and is a short explanation of the purpose of the code The ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is the international identification system for sound recordings and music videorecordings. Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording which can be permanently encoded into a product as its digital fingerprint. Encoded ISRC provide the means to automatically identify recordings for royalty payments. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) recommends that all music producers use ISRC.Benefits of using ISRCThe ISRC system is the key to royalty collection for recordings in the digital information age.ISRC is a unique, reliable, international identification system.ISRC provides a unique tool for the purpose of rights administration.ISRC is a useful identification tool in the electronic distribution of music.ISRC coding is compatible with standards developed in the field of consumer electronics and is readable by hardware already used in the recording industry.ISRC is cost effective - it can be put into operation without requiring special investment in equipment or technologies.

This is a great topic, thanks for posting! I need to do a little research on this, meself, and will post what I can find. \m/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... tmlDetails on actually embedding the code, here:http://www.ifpi.org/content/section_res ... ook.htmlIt looks like you can't embed the codes in DVD music videos with just any old software, not sure about CDs, 'til I have some time to dig through the handbook.

".7.1. Compact DiscIn the case of Compact Discs the ISRCs and other PQ-data are encoded in the disc sub-code (Q channel) in the disc mastering process. For this reason, ISRCs must be encoded for each track in the Pre-Master for CD. The ISRC codes, together with the Digital Copy Prohibited flag, and the relevant point of sale code, such as EAN/UPC should be inserted on the Pre-Master during the pre-mastering process from the original Master.3.7.2. Mini-DiscThe process for Mini-Disc is very similar to that for Compact Disc.3.7.3. DVD-AudioIn DVD-Audio, the ISRC is contained in the packet headers of an audio stream and can be included by authoring systems.3.7.4. DVD-VideoDVD-Video has a similar structure to DVD-Audio and the ISRC can be added by authoring systems.3.7.5. Super Audio CDFor the SACD (Super Audio CD) format, the ISRC coding specification is contained in the SACD System description Part 2, Audio Specification. It states that the ISRC and Genre List must be present in the area called “Area TOC”, which contains information for each track. The SACD specification recommends that the ISRC is present but if none is assigned, the NUL code (00h) is automatically used."
