It's the listing stupid!!

Post by mazz » Wed Aug 01, 2007 11:07 am

I put in a custom critique for the TV composer montage I submitted and wasn't forwarded to: TAXI # D070713CPThe critique was very helpful, particularly in one aspect. It kept referring back to the listing and which sections of the montage were on target for the listing and which were not and why. Two of the sections of the montage that the screener felt were the most on target were ones that were pretty much buried between cuts that I thought were stronger. As the title of my thread implies, I need to keep the listing more focussed in my mind when I'm composing or choosing an existing piece for submission. I did this with the recent ambient listings and was forwarded. Hmmmmm I'm having the experience where I know something but it hasn't sunk in to a deeper level yet. That's what's happening right now regarding targeting the listing. A wise composer friend of mine (who's initials are DW ) very recently suggested another strategy for dealing with this exact subject so the time is ripe to absorb it more deeply.I guess I needed a little group therapy session, thanks for listening fellow inmates! So maybe I shouldn't have called myself stupid, was it too off-putting or just plain, uh, stupid? . Just a little slow to catch on sometimes. Anyone else have a similar experience?Mazzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hey MazzI was also returned on that listing and after reading your post (and the one you posted on the other thread with the custom critique) I felt I could have been reading my own critique in yours. It happens. I think in my case I got too caught up in trying to "show them all I can do" and threw in a lot of stuff that wasn't called for on the listing and ignored stuff that WAS specifically requested. I think others have expressed much more eloquently on this forum about the importance of reading the listings correctly and then reading between the lines as well. It almost seems like it takes a psychology degree to interpret the listings but in the end, a little experience goes a long way. I take every return as a learning experienced (and I've learnt a lot ) and it seems you do too, in that sense, we're on the same boat. All we can do is keep writing and pay more attention.Antonio

Has anyone had much luck being contacted after sumitting to a Dispatch listing? Just wondering.

squidlips (love that name, cracks me up!)I was contacted by a publisher and ended up signing a contract as a result of a Dispatch listing (2 forwards from different listings to the same client). It took about 3 or 4 months for them to contact me.Good luck,Mazz

Hey squid... I got a pretty quick call, deal, and project, and an extra piece of custom music from a Dispatch listing. I'm thinking it was under a month from the submission...
