Jacqueline takes Dave to "Punkville"

Post by davewalton » Sat Nov 24, 2007 9:33 am

Help! I've been kidnapped! Well, sort of. Some of you met Jacqueline (founder/singer/etc of Otto's Daughter and jvbod69 here on the forum). I saw a Dispatch listing for Punk with German vocals (how far away is that from my "normal" stuff?) and since she and I are working on another project together I thought it'd be fun to try. Oh yeah... she's German so that helps. The first music idea I sent her I got back something like "I'm not sure what it is but it's not Punk... maybe Electonic Punk?" OK... give me a chance to warm up here. Finally on music idea #3 things got going. Our first collaboration turned out pretty good I think although we didn't make the Dispatch deadline (too much time spent while I tried to find my "Punk" self). I did the music bed and she did the melody, lyrics, and vocals. It's not quite finished. It's probably more of a "Pop Punk" track at this stage (for all you Punk purists )... all virtual guitars so we have some real guitars to add to fill things out and give it a looser feel along with a better mix (or worse, depending on your Punk point of view). Lyrics and vocals in English are on their way. All in all though I'm very happy to post this at this stage, if nothing else to take the focus away from "porn" music around here. Original mix (guitars too hot)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/PrivateArea/Dav ... mp3Updated mix 2 (guitars pulled back)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/PrivateArea/Dav ... 2.mp3Since the lyrics are in German, I have no idea what the title is yet. Also, she SAYS it's about not giving a damn about someone, but if I find out there's something in there about me, porno music, and women's underwear, there's going to be BIG trouble! Enjoy!DaveComments from the real Punk rockers here will be accepted... nothing from you dopey "composers".

Wow, this is refreshing!!!! Love her voice!!! Guitars are a little hot so it's hard to hear anything else, if they're not there (they could be) I would suggest some crashes to follow the guitar when it does a walk down (bridge?), I always liked that in punk. Good job, German porn music maybe? Geo

I know you said no dopey composers -- which definitely includes me -- but I still have to say great job! I'm impressed. Quote:It's not quite finished... it's all virtual guitars and we have some real guitars to add to fill things out and give it a looser feel.OK, now I have to ask: what synth guitars are you using?! They sound so much better than the ones I have! In fact, mine are so poor that I'd never submit anything with them on the final tracks. I use them merely as placeholders, no matter how low-budget the project is.And, how do you play them?Quote:Also, she SAYS it's about not giving a damn about someone, but if I find out there's something in there about me, porno music, and women's underwear, there's going to be BIG trouble!Yeah, I think you're pretty safe. I speak a little German, and all I picked out was something about Dave and "hot transvestites" or something.

God you're in love with that Virtual Guitarist aren't you? So far I haven't heard anything about "Dave in his underwear doing porn music" in the lyric yet but it's hard to make out anything with the guitars being twice as loud as everything else... If you fix it pronto you shall be forgiven this faux pas since you are a punk novice...and lest you think I'm a "dopey composer guy", you should know that not too long ago I did a whole CD's worth of international pop and rock songs which included a Korean Punk song...entitled "Sea Sang Eul Ba Gger Na Ga" (I'm not kidding )

Quote:God you're in love with that Virtual Guitarist aren't you? Well, since I don't play guitar and it's the only thing I have... Live guitars are forthcoming. Quote:So far I haven't heard anything about "Dave in his underwear doing porn music" in the lyric yet but it's hard to make out anything with the guitars being twice as loud as everything else... If you fix it pronto you shall be forgiven this faux pas since you are a punk novice...I had been listening/working with this for quite a while and I think my ears are a little fatigued. I probably should wait for a day but I did pull back the guitars and pushed up the vocals. It *seems* more balanced. I just wanted to get a fix up before forgiveness ran out. Original mix (guitars too hot)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/PrivateArea/Dav ... mp3Updated mix 2 (guitars pulled back)www.DaveWaltonMusic.com/PrivateArea/Dav ... mo2.mp3Fix is also up in the original post. Thanks for the feedback everyone and feel free to pipe up with additional comments.

Dave,I like the song and the new mix is better. Since I'm a dopey composer and am breaking the rules by replying I'll stick my foot in my mouth and suggest the tiniest bit of slap back echo on the vocal (almost inaudible) and maybe some subtle distortion/doubling effects on certain lines (you'd probably need a translation to know which ones to do it to). That might give a bit more variety without losing the punk aesthetic (which I don't know much about being a dopey composer and all ). The guitars sound good, maybe some "real" counter lines would spice it up but it's pretty cool as is.Where have you decided to have the first piercing, or should I dare ask? Good work! Mazz

Quote:Dave, this is NOT punk. This is a rock song. All the guitars and bass are playing the same notes, like they all know what each other is doing. I'm not gonna pretend or try to convince you that I'm an authority. And I have to say, the guitar volumes being louder that the vocals, was just fine. People listening for the first time, are trying to hear the lyrics. When they can't understand them, they assume the vox are too quiet. Remember punk - for lack of a better term, it was non-musicians giving the finger to the established ways of doing things. Current Punkers still believe they are carrying the same flag, but it is definitely trendier now. There are more fahsion rules, but it's rarely about the bass and guitars playing the same thing. Or drumming that is pefectly in tempo. I'm OK with you thinking my opinion is of no help, and still wanna be your pal.steve I still love you. When we get the live guitars in there, that'll loosen things up a little and a bit of time spent with the mix should help with getting a more raw kind of sound. The mix was done just with my input (she's been busy with a CD release for Otto's Daughter) so once I get her in on this, things should get to where they need to be.

I took a listen. I'll wait until the final mix and comment then. Signed,Old ex-punker (and yeah, it's rock, not punk. Sorry Dave! Keep at it, you'll get it there!)

Quote:Hi Dave - it is more rock than punk. I don't know what date range the listing required but if you want a good reference of more "polished" punk (i.e. punk by people who could play their instruments ...) check out The Jam "In The Street Today" on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/v/Hc2ZIQ-xp7o&rel=1) and A Bomb (following video). It's kind of interesting, I know some Punk is pretty trashy sounding but just listening to some "reference" punk recently like the Ramones, their music sounds fairly polished to me...http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... 77819006Of course maybe the Ramones don't really represent Punk Rock... There's definitely a divide between what some would consider "true" Punk and some of the Punk that's a little more polished. One of the tunes I used as a reference is Green Day's "Basket Case":http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... i=5132553I wouldn't have considered Green Day to be Punk but I was given their name as reference from several people. Like electronica or anything else, there's always so many sub-genres and alternatives to a principle Genre. Play the German tune for a straight ahead rocker and they'll label it as something else other than "Rock".Certainly the goal is to turn this into something that can be easily identified... the fact that it isn't that yet is just an indication that there's more work left to be done. I suspect this might be close to "Alternative". If that describes Green Day and this track is similar in sound to "Basket Case", maybe Alternative is a better genre description for the moment. Just feeling my way through.

Just feeling my way through. I would agree with it sounding more alternative than punk, Dave. I take it you're committed to punk? Go for it, dude!
