Just bought Cubase Artist 8.5

Hi Graham,

I'd be willing to bounce some idea off you from time to time.. I recently bought 8.5 (Pro)..I'm on mac but this DAW is really streamlined to speed up workflow..it's really nice..

I'd definitely suggest looking at Steinberg's vids..they're actually really useful..as well as you Tube

So far I really like Cubase..am slowing migrating from logic..

Hi!

Make yourself a template, with the audio settings you want, then when you create a new track just load your template and your audio settings will be there. You could also put in a piano track a strings track etc so your workflow is faster. Before long you'll be adding lots of things to your template!
The only time i've used the media bay is when i pressed the wrong shortcut button to it! I've never found a reason to use it. And now after taking out the shortcut i'll probably never see it again!
I'm also on 8.5 pro, so it could be that certain things might not work.

Agree with Sunset, check out the videos, there are some very useful videos out there.

I'm still using Cubase 5,lol!

The easiest way I found using the media bay, is to make a file on a hard disk called "Media Bay" and place all your midi and audio loops. Then auto scan the file. Now it will recognize them. Then just click on the name of the group of files I wanted to audition, now in the main window it will show all the files in that group. Click on one and at the bottom of the window is the auditioning window, and if you double-click it it inserts it into the track you have selected in the main daw. There are settings to determine if it will be tempo matched to the host or not. All of the extra tagging and such I never really found much useful. There is a way to use a vsti to audition midi files, I don't remember how.

Mp3 encoders are usually downloaded separately because of license issues, Lame, Fraunhofer, used to be free??

Sample rate and bit size are usually selected in the preferences, so it probably reverts to whatever is set in the preference file.

I never managed to upgrade cubase because I had bought Wavelab 6 at the same time, and other programs, so the updates always seemed to be something I already had with another program, though it is nice to have it all integrated into one program. My manual is starting to fall apart, I use it a lot still,lol!

I've always used the device menu, vst instruments, F11, to choose a vst instrument and track. Tip: you have to delete the vst from this window before you can delete the tracks in the main window. I've never used template tracks
or instrument tracks.

There seems no way to record live audio directly from a VST instrument, although you can freeze a midi track or export it as audio then re-import. I think this may be a limitation that applies only to Artist but can perhaps be done within the Pro version. I'd be glad to hear if there is a way though. [And, yes, there are times that I would prefer to do this rather than record midi first.]

You have to draw in a midi track with the pencil tool. Right click the arrow, select the pencil. Now draw however many measures you need.

Now you can play and record your midi controller, midi channel is usually default channel 1.

Intuitively, you are probably thinking that it works like recording audio, that the track appears as you are recording, but it's not the same with the midi.

Len, it sounds like your method will still record midi, or will it also record audio? I read one suggestion where the VST track output was routed to a bus track, then that bus track output was routed to the input of a new audio track. However, in Cubase Artist there seems no option to route a bus output to the input of an audio track. Maybe that needs the Pro version.

If you open a vsti, F11, it will ask if you would like to create a midi track, choose yes. The device menu, vst connections is where you set up the busses. Those busses depend on your soundcard, how many ins and outs. If you open a vsti, F11, the default output buss, is probably going to be the stereo out buss, you will see the audio signal on the track fader and the stereo out buss. You still need to draw in a midi with the pencil tool for the track before you can record a midi, or you can import a midi track in, and you will hear the audio through the stereo buss, if that is the way you have the buss set up in the device menu, vst connections. Now note that if all your tracks are routed through the stereo buss, you have to mute the tracks you want silenced if you only want to render 1 track for example, M for mute button, S for solo button.

Your interface or sound card determines how many physical busses you can have, I am limited to stereo in and out, because I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card, but only use the s/pdif digital in/out connected to an RME Adi-2.

I've mentioned the physical busses, you will use a physical buss if say you need to send and return a signal to a physical stand alone reverb unit, however, if your reverb is a vst, you can open an fx track, Project menu > create fx track, and choose a reverb vst. Under the send column, you will click on the black space and choose your reverb. Also you have to click the blue button to activate it. Then there's a line you move to the right to send more signal.

What specific bus output would you be trying to connect to the input of an audio track? Generally you would render the track and check the preference box to have it open as a new audio in your project.

see where it says mono in and stereo out in the inspector panel. this is where you choose the in/out buss.
if you click on the mono in, whatever input busses you have setup in the device setup vst connections, input busses, is what will show up here. Where it shows stereo out, will be the output busses you have set up.

Cubase is super legit, Telefunkin.

There are key differences between Artist and Pro, and it may get to the point one day where you want to fork out for the upgrade. Once you get into the cycle it's pretty cheap to stay on top of new versions.

I can also highly recommend the Steinberg videos to help speed up your processes and the previous suggestion of making a template and working from that is absolutely necessary if you're going to be making tracks for Taxi.

I've always found it the most intuitive DAW for composing music and over the last handful of years it has also become equal (or better) of any other DAW for mixing and editing too.

Been using Cubase artist 8.5 for my programming needs. Love the fresh and modern sounds that are included and have purchased some of the additional steinberg vsts (love dark planet, treibwerk). I LOVE the offline bounce ability as well as the render in place function. Super useful when wanting to use the same vst & midi track to try out different sounds without having to create a million duplicate tracks. Still use protools for tracking live & mixing though. Seems like there is a ton of capability within cubase that I haven't unlocked/figured out yet

90% of my work is live tracking and mixing Shadow - it's extremely powerful and the mix engine sounds fantastic.

Some people will always prefer certain DAWs for various reasons, but Cubase is one that you really can do everything in.

That could be Graham, I know my manual does mention some things as (cubase only), evidently they don't list every difference in the comparison chart they have on their website.
