Just wanted to add something about feel..
Hi TAXI friends.
Just a quick observation on a lot of the music I've listened to, and some I've commented on recently.
No disrespect intended but just because something is snapped to the grid doesn't mean it's "in time" for the song.
Some songs and instrumentals ( especially the dystopian Christmas music) would require the melody to "float" a little around the beat. Not completely out of time but some notes a bit behind the beat to let the song breathe. You could go into your midi and move thing back slightly, or in Logic "humanize" things (and then adjust manually) and it makes a world of difference.
One of my co-writers just mentioned a Ryan Tedder course on songwriting that he recently took. Ryan mentions that when he produces he moves his vocals back a few milliseconds. I do that with my vocal songs. It's the same with cues. You can't have the melody playing exactly in time or it doesn't sound authentic.

Quantizing can be the devil! Some patches have longer attack transients than others, especially strings and pads, so it's important to place the notes where the sound actually starts versus where the waveform starts (if that makes any sense). Most DAWs have a "Humanize" feature that adds some subtle variety to note placement.

Amen brother.. It can take the feel right out of a great track. Piano chords always require me to move notes. No one that I know plays a complete piano chord with every note falling exactly on time. And horn stabs I'm always moving notes forward or back to mimic a real section.Paulie wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 8:54 amQuantizing can be the devil! Re: Just wanted to add something about feel..
From the FWIW FILE - I stumbled onto this worktape mix of a Country/Gospel song of mine, that had the drum tracks muted.
And even though there had been a click track, and all the other parts were synced in solid time - the song had a surprising 'fresh life' to it with no drums - IMHO.
It was quite revealing - and your post reminded me of that. I don't mean to hijack your thread, JP - here's the track (I can delete it, if you prefer).

Interesting observation Peter.. it's funny how good a track can get when you start muting certain tracks!funsongs wrote: ↑Thu Dec 02, 2021 12:29 pmFrom the FWIW FILE - I stumbled onto a mix of a Country song of mine, that had the drum tracks muted.

the first time I played this track, I was halfway into it before it dawned on me that it was a worktape, and the drums were M.I.A. - and not the album cut. DUH??!!
