Language - is this English

Post by Hookjaw Brown » Mon Apr 26, 2010 10:03 pm

I got a critique that I don't understand on a blues tune - Parking Meter Blues - http://www.taxi.com/hookjawbrown
It was:
"good form
,, why not introduce a radical transition, contrast along the way.. ? you can write in contour , melodic range even within the confines of a blues song"

Does anyone know what "contour, melodic range" means in this context.

Thanks
Hookjaw

Maybe the screener was thinkin' Elvis's Jailhouse Rock. This song felt like maybe it was the blues song that inspired jailhouse rock.
I don't know if there was a blues song as such, but Elvis was certainly a radical transition at the time for a blues song, and I could see where his song might fit the bill, I guess it would be a good example anyway of what the screener commented.

Hookjaw,

Cool Song! If it was a custom critique, you can email Taxi and ask them to explain it to you. I had an issue like that and Robin Frederick emailed me back with a critique.

From my experience, I think they want you to change it up a bit.. maybe add a bridge in a different key with some fast syncopated or scat type lyrics, then come back to the original song.
