Larger or More Monitors?

Post by Razor7Music » Wed Feb 20, 2019 2:31 pm

Hey Group--

I know this is fairly subjective, but I have very limited space in my project studio (grateful to have it though), and I'm wondering, if you had a choice between say, two large monitors or three smaller ones, which would you choose?

I've had 2 monitors in my studio for, well ever. However, I use 3 monitors at work which makes me very productive, so I can go either way. I'm just wondering what you use?
Thanks,

I used to use three small monitors, but I've since moved back down to two. I actually really like the look and size of one large monitor, so I might be moving that way next.

Interesting. If you go to one, what size are you thinking?

I use one giant monitor FWIW. I actually use a big 40 some inch flat screen tv lol! I had it in my living room for a brief moment in college and then when I no longer had roommates I no longer needed to have a tv as all my tv viewing is thru my computer anyways.

I checked this option out some time ago but didn't jump. How close do you sit to the screen? Any graininess or other minuses at all with this?
Using 2 old Benq 22" and 18.9" here.

I sit far closer than I should honestly, it's on my desk where a normal computer monitor would be. When people see it for the first time they're usually a bit shocked and ask why, it's just something I've done for awhile and got used to it I guess.

Just used a tape measure - I sit about 2 feet away from the screen on the dot. No graininess or anything.

The main reason I want/need one large screen as opposed to multiple screens is that I use a Hackintosh that wasn't set up for multiple screens. It was something I overlooked when asking someone to build it, I just assumed that it would work. Didn't know I had to specify that - I'm not super literate in the world of building computers and all that so I can't really elaborate on why it doesn't work with my current hardware, it just doesn't. So when I found out I could only have one screen, it just made sense to use a very big one as I was doing lots of scoring gigs at that point and needed to have the picture up alongside my session.

Thanks for the details Mark. Kudos for running a Hackintosh as well!
I sit pretty close too.
I have seen a huge screen in a studio about 10 years ago and it really impressed me at the time.
Just had a thought about using a huge touch screen with 3D goggles  .

I think more than 2 monitors doesn't really make sense.

I have 2 x 20" displays. One has my arrange page - the second has my piano roll and mixer on it.

If I were going to go to 1 display I would go with something big like this https://www.staples.ca/en/LG-32MA68HY-P ... gJ7PPD_BwE

or If I won the lottery maybe this: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/C34H890WJN/

Otherwise it seems like you would be losing real estate.

I agree with Andy and his ideas and choices.

LG for example, as well as others perhaps, has the split screen and pip configuration app, and with a curved large screen means you can view a larger area with less head turning.

Thanks, all. Sounds like the verdict from your replies, is one large monitor is ideal. I'm not sure I could get used to that. I can't recall the last time I used a single monitor--spoiled I guess. My DAW software is all set with views I like, and it's set for dual monitors. Three does sound like overkill now that I'm reading your posts and thinking about it.

I'll probably go with two large monitors though.

Again, thanks all!
